Another day of chaos in the MOT 977L camp!, with a slightly leaky carb and too much boost causing an under bonnet fire!..oops!..then the head gasket went but luckily no damage to the head.

the car was only on Peter baldwins yesterday(8th April), showing good smooth power, caught alight there too..card rebuild kit needed!.

By accident at PB's i ran 28ish psi of boost with a less than effective intercooler(where's the credit card), i suspect this may have resulted in weekening the head gasket.

glad it went on the rollers and not at York on monday.

thanks to all my little helpers especially Dave C.

the car then produced the same the power on 17 psi as it did on 22psi...

After a test drive the machine pulled very well and was as quick as ever!

Was a good day, always nice to put faces to names. Good pictures too.

Quite spectacular when Jons head gasket went- there were sparks flying. It looked like a chunk of gasket melted and got blown onto the fan.

So, anything is possible with enough money, but can I afford to turbo charge the 8 port?

Hmmm......

MiniWilliams, you got 144 at the wheels which is approx 216 at the fly, i say approx. Can see you being happy with that!!!
Ill get the figures soon, just want to check i can remember them all. Can remember most mind. Ill see if Mikes about tomorrow.

He's only giving flywheel power though and he said that with experience he can say that those rollers run roughly 2/3rds of fly power

JUst a bit of maths, if the transmission lost 30% then that means you were seeing 70% at the wheels. to get 100% of the figure divide by 7 then times by 10. When you just add 30% your adding 30% of the wheel power (i.e. 30% of 70% not making 100%)

So according to my calcs

Miniwilliams - 144 at the wheels = 206 at the fly

Giallofy - 114 at the wheels = 163 at the fly

:)

Cool, didnt realise that was TVR dave!! Had a good chat with him, nice chap!

There was certainly some good power figures yesterday, Mike also seemed quite impressed with alot of the engines that went on the rollers too.

Good effort from Jon changing his head gasket in the car park and getting it back on the rollers!

I was well happy with mine making 67 at the wheels which equals 100ish at the fly!

Your right about TVR Dave, me and the old man were talking to him for ages, couldn't imagine being so competitive in a circuit racer, must be v.addictive!!

I'll leave the maths to you lot LOL as I'm not formula with this type or RR as the one I normal us, measures the loses on the run down and it prints it as a separate graph.

but all I'll add to this is 30% seems to be a lot of losers to me!
Like Jon said a S/c box should lose less than a normal one which i thought as less than 30% But i could be wrong :)

How can the transmission losses be judged as a precentage ?
If you lost 30% through the transmission, this would mean if you had an engine with 100 bhp @ flywheel you would only have 70 @ the wheels , a loss of 30 bhp.....
So in theory if you had the same engine with 200 bhp @ flywheel you would only see 160 @ the wheels, a loss of 60 bhp !!!
Why would the transmission absorb twice as much power at 200hp than it did at 100hp ?
Granted friction will be greater with a higher power output, but not enough that the losses would increase in this proportion to the engine power.
I would have thought about 20-25 hp is lost through the transmission, slightly less on a well built SC....

Just my opinion.......... *smiley*

62horses at the wheels and counting

Mine made 62 at the wheels. Not bad for a standard turbo running very standard boost.

It pales in comparision to Miniwilliams and Giallofly but we can all dream, cant we???

It gives me an idea of what I've got and what I can build on.

Must agree that TVRDave's racer was very very nice!!!!!!

mine made just a bit less than cordantiums 60 at the wheels which im pretty happy with thats giving me a starting point so buy the next rr day im aiming for a bit more but nothing too drastic though 3 figures would be nice.
i think mine would have been a bit more if mike hadnt have had to turn the boost down due to the excessive pinking. doh *tongue*

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Phil as the power goes up so do the losers,
When i had my 1380 i was having around 20-25 BHP of losers now i've got a LOT more then that as the powers gone up. so it won't stay the same:)

Yes obviously it will rise due to friction, but i doubt 30%.
so an engine with 100hp will lose 30hp in the transmission ?
then the same engine with 200hp will lose 60hp ?
the same engine with 300hp will then lose 90hp ?

I can't see it rising like this ?
