Anyone any experiance with fitting a turbo to a midget?
I am in an early stage but it seems that i need to cut a hole in the bonnet to accept the dashpot.

I have 2 mgs one with a 5spd toyota thats got the turbo the other is a 5spd sierra, both boxes good.

If you see my first thread what oil pressure do you get on the gauge?

we need to talk about the gearboxes i am kind of desperate.
for the oil pressure, there s a treat not to long ago about oil pressures. low oil pressure does not mean that its not lubricating, but in your case after turbo install the oil pressure drop may mean that vital organs get less oil now. maybe you have to squeeze oil feed. lets wait for the turbo wizards on here to reply.

basically 1 question:
I need a toyota gearbox soon (or quicker) complete with mod kit.

I have wrecked two std gearboxes already. I understood that the toyota box requires the least modifications to the bodywork. so that would be my favorit, I would even settle for the four speed box as long as i could lay my hands on a converion kit.
All help would be highly appreciated, you guys are in the right land for this stuff.

Being honest both the toyota and sierra require similar amount of changes under the car, ie cutting away the bottom of the tunnel to a little past the box section.

The main difference is in the gear stick position, the toyota is in the normal postion of a midget, the sierra about 8-9 inchs back so what I did with that one was use the old hole and fabricate a small box section so I have somewhere to chuck keys, coins, cartons of milk fit great.

You will find loads of sierra T9's but probably find it very hard to find any toyota boxs nowadays.

I think front line can and still have some parts for the toyota conversion as they mostly do sierra parts nowadays. But afraid its not to cheap as you need a few of the bits for certain, eg modified bellhousing for the gearbox, shortened propshaft, modified clutch plate and release bearing.

Any more q's feel free to ask

I just visited their website and send them an inquiry, thanks for that. Bath is quite a bit away for me, as i remember its at the west coast?
I run std brakes still, but I may have to alter that soon. first a gearbox and wirewheels. Without running there is no need for braking.
Cheers Arno

They posted the basic kit to me within a couple of days of order, gave me help over the phone when I was then fitting it. Its fairly easy to do, and certainly both boxs are great compared to the original straight cut boxs.

I used the origninal gear stick and shortened it, far cheaper than buying theres. Carpet dint realy need chaning because I used the old hole and created my new key, coins, milk etc holder.

Good news mate, thanks for the info, Ill wait for their reply. Its certainly cheaper than a toyota box from new sealand.
Its nice to chat with someone who has experiance with this (non commercially).

Pete, I think I have found what we were discussing earlier. Thanks for your help mate.

Boredpilot, we may get banned to a non mini section now.

afraid ive no pics of me putting it in, and taking a photo when its in doesnt show much as the engine is obviously in the way and the bell housing looks like the old bar where it connect to the gearbox. But ill see if I can get the cars over a pit to take some, but again this wont show much bar the cross membering on the toyota one and the box section missing on the sierra one.

Pete, i do not know this pub, should I?

Boredpilot, whats your favorit Ford or Toyota?, What ford sierra model box should i look for?

There both good, never had a problem with either.

The ford was way easier to find, and parts for the conversion are now cheaper for the ford.

The box your after is of a sierra 1.6 to 2L model and I belive its called the T9

The only difficult in the ford one was the clutch arm pivot which wouldnt allow me to release the clutch fully, now frontline sell one which has a slot instead of a hole, and that solved the problem as it gave about 1-2cm more arm movement, so if you have this problem just change the hole to a slotwith a drill so the pivot arm has a greater movment.

Both have a similar gear ratio and top speed. Personaly I would go for the sierra, just because I was able to create a pocket to hold things. But I would suspect the toyota box is stronger but rarer to find if it ever went wrong.

Toyota box over 15 years since conversion done and only had to change the clutch changed once.
Sierra box over 8 years since conversion done and not had to do anything
