Gunna run copper ones through the car !

Should i be making a new larger outlet pipe from my tank as well ? other wise it seems pretty pointless as the outlet from teh tank is smaller than 8mm isnt it ?

Anyone got that site (plumer thingy) from a while ago that had a link to a site selling cheap flexable piping? I was going to order some from there.

this the one you mean feeble?

AFAIK with the tank its best to fill it with water, might be easier to take it to a radiator repair place and they can braze it on for you for about ?20 cos they steam the tank out first.

Also, im gonna run them the same way the old ones went, under the car and then up the back of the front subframe, is this ok taking the heat into consideration? I wont run it round the back of the exhaust though! Ive mounted my fuel pump on the top of the bottom beam of the subframe directly under the tank, so i can direct the piping straight down to it, then along the bottom of the car.

lol. the 10 metres was more than enough. it tried to kink a bit when i ran it up through the front subby where the old one went so i used rubber pipe from the bottom of the subby to the reg. i mounted my pump in the same place too, nice and easy to get at and not too dangerous if it goes tits up, plus i never realised how noisy them pumps were, glad it aint in the boot!

on the pump? yeah, bolted the bracket to the subby first then the pump onto that. now there's a whole mass of pipes there cos i got me filter and return t-piece all on that side of the subby. had to switch the bracket round 180 degrees to get it to sit in the right place though.

Ive just done a temporary job using some of the 10mm copper pipe from plumbworld. (will probably become permanent as it was a good job!!)

i cut the stump of the old outlet on the tank off flush using an angle grinder, then, using a 10mm drill, i drilled the centre of the hole (in the tube) until the pipe became unattached (falls inside). i then continued to drill until i had a nice 10mm hole.

using the bit of pipe drilled out as a template (fished out thru the sender hole) i bent up a new piece out of 10mm copper and poked that through the hole till it was in the same position as the old one.

then i brazed in the new pipe using a high powered blowlamp. (got one of those bernz-o-matic MAPP brazing torches from B&Q.)

i also drilled a hole at the top for a return feed which i also brazed in.

quite simple really, i was expecting a nightmare job.

need more help, give me a shout

a mate moded my tank ; we got a bit of 10mm pipe; made a disc about twice the size of a 10p
then pushe dthe pipe through; cut the edges of the pipe so it could be folded down then it was brazed

then the whole thing brazed to my tank;

the folded down bit of pipe was good as it adds some strength to the protruding pipe

did that make sense ??

Welding fuel tanks is a doddle!

All you do is empty it of fuel (obviously), take out the cap and sender unit and put around 2 galllons of water in it. Grab the tank and give it a real good shake, moving it around, so water gets everywhere.
Drain off the water.
Fill it with another two gallons of water and repeat then drain.
Weld tank.

It's that simple.
If you mix neat petrol and water together in equal proportions, it will not ignite. If you drain a tank, there is vapours and maybe a few cc of fuel in it. Doing all the above means there is naff all chance of it 'flashing' up...

What i did was remove tanks and drain it. then using an airline, blow as much of the liquid out as possible through all 3 openings (filler, outlet and sender hole).

Then leave for 2 days to 'air'

give another good blast with airline and the weld/braze away.

i like brazing... its easyier than welding!!!

I'm the opposite - I hate brazing! Love Gas welding, easy to see when it's time to use the filler rod, and manipulating the flame th flow the molten metal where you want. Brazing, i just end up with a big messy pile of bronze, where i could have had a perfect, neat Gas join!
