vizard mentions in one of his books that a worthwhile mod is to retap and increase the size of the gearbox to engine bolts.....has anyone done this to their turbo motor and is it really needed??

Quite a few people do it...

it should help with keeping the gearbox nice and square but like most turbo mini things I doubt theres any proof any where!

one of my blocks has this mod, whoever done it used alen keys insted of normal bolts as fixings, makes life alot easier as even with the tiny standard bolts its a c*nt to get a spanner in tehre properly..

This mod is done mostly by racers who have problems with the gear box gasket leaking.

I've had minis that have leaked oil from most places, but not from this joint as yet, so not sure how common the problem is.

Sounds a good idea to prevent it in the first place though!

How about this for an easy solution:

Throw away the 'putty steel' 1/4" UNF bolts that rover fitted and get some Cap heads (that's allen key bolts) instead... Easy to fit with one of these 'ball ended' allen keys and easilly stronger (as they are usually 12,9 grade equivalent) than a 5/16" low grade bolt.
Also saves drilling and tapping the block, and reducing the material thickness round the holes on the aluminium gearbox casing...

Allen heads in this application is a fucking nightmare... Get some 5/16 UNF bolts with 3/8" head. The BEST solution, end of discussion.

I beg to differ :)

I have used both 5/16 hex head bolts and cap heads, and the cap heads are far far far far far far far far far easier to fit as long as you have an allen key you cut down a little for the ones over the diff. all others you can use a socket adapter and a torque wrench. Make sure you use washers under the head of the bolts though

You try and get a socket with a torque wrench onto the 5/16 hex heads *wink*

That's why I tell you to use the ones with a 3/8" head. Then you can just use this:

Until you show me an allen key that can do that, you're wrong.
Torque wrench......how anal can you get *happy*

I will also agree with Vegard that using a torque wrench on those isn't necessary. I do however think that allen bolts are good as long as you have a cut down key.

It's still fucking time consuming compared to a ratchet spanner. It may look cool, but I'm not too concerned about that.

NO, I do not use a torque wrench on those 5/16" UNF bolts.

How do you tighten the ones over the diff housing? Slim wrench?
