I just got my wireless router for my new laptop.
Ive accessed the net etc but does anyone have any idea why it only works with a USB wire between the laptop and wireless router.
The laptop is brand new and wireless enabled.
Cheers

switch it on without the cable plugged in

something shoudl pop up by a couple of mins saying "wireless network detected"

click on the little bubble, and you will see your (and maybe others) wireless network

click on it, and then click connect

type in the password (if necersary, a good idea to have one)

Have you enabled the wireless function of the router?

Mine was supplied disabled. Had to log in to it and enable the wireless.

This is so that you can set it up so the guy next door can't use it!

If all else fails try downloading and reinstalling the driver for your wireless card. I had this problem with my mums laptop. it worked fine while i was stealing my neighbours internet, but then i went to uni. I come back a few years later and get our wireless set up, try to search for it on the laptop and nothing. It said the wireless card was working fine and the wireless router was working for sure. Downloaded and reinstalled the driver and bingo, plus it found 2 other unprotected wireless networks *laughing*

You have to access the router by typing in the ip address. Should be in your manual.

There is no manual, just an installation disk. I went through this twice to set it up.

Looks like Nic and me are thinking along the same lines. :)

To access most router config screens you connect your laptop to the router using the network cable supplied, and most routers I've come across have an ip address of 192.168.1.1 - just type that into the address bar on internet explorer.

In fact the most recent routers we have bought at work have the ip address, default username and password injection moulded into the bottom of the case.

Im with Virgin broadband provider and its a Speedtouch 780WL router which I bought from Virgin themselves.

I seriously doubt it!

I've had a play with a similar setup supplied by talktalk where the config disk was only designed to work with the router and usb thingy supplied.

I'd leave the router config alone and look at the wireless setup on the laptop. Nic's first post is the way to go unless you have setup security in which case you'll need to enter your WEP or WPA key depending on how you setup the security on the router.

To look at router settings just type speedtouch into the address bar and it should get you to the settings if your connected through an ethernet. I had a speedtouch 580 wireless and that always got me there.

but agree with neil problem is most likely laptop not router

If i remember correctly to get mine working i enabled wireless network connection, then went into Network connections, right clicked on wireless connection and into properties. Then added a connection under preffered network connections.
Im a bit lost at this sort of thing but done it by pure luck, even if it did take a few erm... hours!

Right, my sister in law has been round and said that I need to connect my wireless router to my desktop then have some card? to plug into the laptop.
I thought if I got a wireless laptop I could get rid of the desktop.
What a load of shit this is!!!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i run a wireless router, not attached to anything but the phone!

Then have wireless laptops and also a wireless adaptor for my desktop upstairs.

I know its daft but have you got the wireless on on your laptop?

Is it running XP or 2000?

You dont need a desktop connected to the routher but you need to make sure the laptop has a wireless adapter and is properly configured.

If its a new laptop paul then you dont need a card as this should already be there hidden away, have you tried going to tools, internet options, connections, lan settings and then click on automatically detect settings?

paul, click on the windows thing on the bottom left corner,

go to settings

then network connections

then double click on the wireless icon in there, check that it is finding your wireless connection

other than that:
check the wireless symbol is lit up on the router, and check that its lit up on the lap top
