...and you were female and got a good deal on insurance, what would you go for? New Type R, Seat Leon Cupra, VXR Astra, Alpha Romeo Brera (not a hot hatch but nice all the same) ST Focus, BINI Cooper S or other? Doing some car shopping for my sister, not realy that fussed on performance but wants something nice around £20k. I say the Leon or the VXR, nice turbo lump. Type R is a bit fizzy for her I say. To be honest none are that nice looking (Alpha is nice in the flesh) and none have really hit the spot. Plus I want to try out this Poll function! BMW 1 series is in the bin for being uglyas is the Renault Megan 225.

Personally i'd have the civic every time. But for a chick, my vote goes to the s. Quick, fun to drive and looks pretty cool.

If it still had the blower rather than the turbo I would too, drove one today, '02, and you put the foot down and it goes WHOOOT! Type R is nice but she's not the sort of person that'd go cruising. Plus she never goes beond 4000rpm or WOT for that matter as it might "hurt the engine". I think she needs something with a lot of torque low down. Leon has nice Brembos!

Hmmm, same guts as the Leon really but a bit more common. I will add that to the list though. She really wants an S3 but a tad out of the price range. 260ps with quattro, mmmm...

Type R that way you can put the engine in the mini if someone smashes into it.

Can't beat Honda Reliability

Focus? I would too as it's a 2.5 litre and cheap for what you get.

not kidding - Golf TDI 150, soooo much torque plus you can chip it to 180 easily, in terms of everyday driving it'll be faster than a type R (until the R comes on cam)

Yeah I nearly would consider a turbo weasel but my sis hates them. Yes S3 is ideal but is about £27k for an entry level. Has anyone noticed the lack of colours available in these sorts of cars? Black, silver, red and somtimes blue. Also for some reason I don't find most new cars attractive. The 1 and 3 series BMs are rotton. Some of the fancy 335ds are nicer but they'd need to be. The ST is OK but the basic focus is ugly too. Civic is rare but growing on me in Type R form and the Leon is a bit MPV-ish. Meagne has a ugly rump so on and so forth. Just me?

personally i like the looks of the Megane, but the build quality and price tag (for a renault) would put me off, and i like the 1 series, think the M/sport kit makes it look loads better tho.

what about a TT? start at about 23k, but a 12 month old one would come in under 20k.

Leon is a great car, loverly to drive.

As she is a girl she won't worry too much about the fact the BINI, when driven by a bloke screams "I'm as gay as I am stupid ... stupid stupid gay poofter...."
For a girl it just screams "stupid stupid stupid stupid"

Type R a pain in "normal" driving, as is the Astra.

ALFA is great when running properly but what about the other 364 days of the year?????

Focus is well a Ford, so automatically rubbish to me ........

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Ah well spoken, you've summed it up really well. They all have their bad sides and thus I am struggling to recommend anything to her. I think the leon wins really; as you say the Type R is OK but would be a bit limp around town, VXR is torque steer city and the BINI is common as muck. Leon comes in a nice white but is 5 door only and doesn't have options for leather, heated seats etc. Just want a 3 door with a turbo, fairly civilised, not too ugly, a range of colours and something that's not going to break every ten minutes but it's tough. It's up to her now!

Actually out of the list above I'd not have any.

I'd be looking for an Ibiza Cupra Rr .... 180 PS in a Polo .... lol .... how cool is that going to be ???!!!!!???? When Candice was looking for an everyday car at the time she was doing daft milage for work the best car we could find was the Ibiza (bang for buck wise).

If it was me then I'd buy a MK2 Scirocco GTx and spend the other £19K on making it awesomely quick and adding a Rieger kit .... oh, I already did that ..... twice.

Neither would she really, that's the prob. She has a 147 which she loves (despite it falling apart and the trip computer kindly telling her how that falling apart process is going with regular updates) but alas they didn't make a new one and I won't let her spend daft money on Alphas again. To sum up:

Type R- too fizzy
Leon- 5 door only and MPV-ish
VXR-hmmm, not really her
Alpha- never again
S3- too expensive
BINI- bit of an image prob with it
ST- Ugly (well, it's growing on me anyway)
Golf GTi- heavy and the Leon has the same running gear with 40ps more
Mazda 3 Mps- Fast but 5 door and rare looking

There you go that's all them nicely slated! Ah well, it's up to her. Thanks for your opinions.

No Nic no pics!
