.... toyoing with the idea of replacing the a series with something like a toyota starlet turbo engine for reliability and quietness, now me cars a roady again. now i rekon if i flogged my engine setup it wouldnt cost much/anything. i think its not a difficult job to make a subby. cars a clubby so no extended front needed.

pros and cons please

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

same here, heart says no, i'm the sorta person that if you have a mini it should be a-series based, but then if you want reliable daily, get a boring micra or somat, i think the engine swap to another brand is bit overdoing it!

a mate of mine is putting 2 xe vauxhall engines in his minivan, i think the engineering part is good but its spoiling the thing overall

i can see the attraction to a modern motor but with megajolt/megasquirt or a simple injection setup i think motor thats reliable & quick enough can be done with the a/a+ these days

If your going to do it, use a charade GTti engine. Forged crank, rods and pistons from the factory, 7800rpm red line, all the stock internals are good for 200bhp un-fettled.

The noise is glorious too, my last one had 147bhp at the wheels with a chip, 1bar boost, and an exhaust, very exciting indeed!

As blown imp said, the starlet is very short geared IIRC and the charade engine sounds like the way to go.

I'd like to do a diesel, not for economy but to open the injector pump right up and create a rocket.

That said I don't know enough about diesels to start fiddling with them like that!

The GTti engine is a neat setup, 1L 3 cylinder, ally block, and still got the essential item...the turboo. *wink*

A mate of mine had one a few years back, had it chipped hybrid turbo running 15psi (I think) 155 bananas!

The only thing you might struggle with is getting spares!

the GTti block is cast iron, for spares visit camskill. Most parts are still available.

One thing though, please please dont break a whole car if you do this, there are only around 200 left in the UK, thinning out the numbers even more would be tragic. Engine become available quite often on Ebay, or talk to the GTtiOC for news on parts etc.

Gotta be kidding me fast carl?

The GTti engine was designed under the group B rallying rules to go into the 926r charade DeTomaso,

DRS in japan have got over 300bhp from this engine, very little can be done to improve the head flow. The injection system is fully sequential and runs off of a MAP sensor.

My old engine -

200bhp engine -

Its a fantastic engine, but the alternators are rubbish. If you want a small alternator, get a motorbike one!
