Run the car again today ..

Noticed smoke coming from under the carb; does anyone have any idea what this could be; Inot loads; like what would come out of a oil breater with a little filter on it ?

ALso

When idling ; its running very lumpy ; and very smokey from the exhaust; when you rev it the smoke goes ?

Please PLEASE

S

Stop driving it about while its not running properly...

Your probably killing the engine because its miles off being setup!

I got this also, im hoping that from changing all the gaskets it will be ok again. The oil level in the dashpot didnt go down though so it shouldnt be that.

Smoke from the carb... White or grey smoke? If white, it's likely the o-ring on the float bowl 'lid' is leaking fuel out... Chances are the lid is warped aswell - a common problem.
New seals are pennies from burlens, but you have to abide by the ?5 min fee - so buy two - one for the float, one for the dashpot seal. Also buy 3 spindle seals - for the throttle and choke, and maybe a new flo-jet whilst you're there. All that and your carb will be ready for many more (reliable) miles to come!

Alternativly - if the smoke is grey... It could be the turbo or union leaking oil...

oh, regarding the lid - i usually just file off the two little 'lugs' sticking up, then 'draw' the lid over a large file to take off the high bits (usually around the bolt holes). Don't get it perfectly flat, just flatter! The new (soft) seal will stop the leaks!

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Smoke on idle, most likely turbo, possible valve stem seals.

Not likely to be rings unless its breathing really heavy.

Headgasket would be white-ish smoke.

Check breathers are clear though as this can cause smoke.

little bit of smoke on idle isnt the end of the world, just budget for a turbo rebuild in the future, may last a long time like it, depends just how bad it is.

Wisps of smoke under the carb, just look for leaks, thats all it will be!

At worst id of thought a carb rebuild.

Id sort the carb problem the RR it. Depends how much your splashing out for the RR really. In theory if you have it RR'd then rebuild the turbo you should be ok providing you run the same boost before and after. *smiley*

Things to buy for the carb:
Two off float lid seals (one for float lid, one for the dashpot); Three off spindle seals (one for choke spindle, two for throttle); One off flo-jet assy; One off solid throttle disc (to replace the std one witrh the poppet valve); One off plenum / carb gasket (with the correct holes); and finally, the o-rings on the choke spindle. You will need to quote the number on your carb ID tag, or get three o-rings, as there were two different outer ones used...
You are talking about ?20 max incl p&p for all the above - they really are that cheap!

Im going to order that lot, just incase i get the same problem still when i startup, i remember mine was white smoke, and looked like it came from the very bottom of the carb.

JIM .... you can do it ... the welding I mean ; Just be ultra clean, patient and do a small bit at a time !

DAve - thanx for the info on the carb; I will buy all those bits ; and I can braze up the poppet in the butterfly whilei am at it !!

Looked at my fuel pressure today ... 5 PSI @ idle ; took it down to 3.75 PSI at idle and it runs so much better ...
The fuel pressure gaugue is very entertaining to watch when it comes on Boost !!

SMokey at idle still doing it; leave the car running for 30 seconds and then it starts ; My exhaust tailipipe is black as the ace of spades
So I am going for the smoke being coz it is running filthy dog rich !

What dya rekon ?

blue smoke after 30s idle is as ive said before mate. black smoke is rich running.
lower fuel pressure at idle seems to suit the turbo carbs, ive found that out after a while that 4.5 is just too high, much prefer 3.5ish.
most likely due to a worn carb that they prefer this though!
Id get the carb sorted then get it set up on std boost before you start winding it up. *smiley*

could be valve stem seals...

just get it set up and see what happens.

Just curious but are you running thin oil? sometimes can push pass the seals.

Just see how it goes, if its not much i wouldnt worry at the minute.

check those breathers are clear though.

too much oil pressurew aswell - 55 is more than enough, but no less than 25 at tickover when piping hot!

mines going for rolling road as soon as its back on the road, if not a week after. I think it cost 80 quid ot have my standard 1.3 setup, i think if it was twin carbs it costs 120, not sure about how much they will rob u for a turbo!

I think it was 15/40 i put in ,,,, whatever it said in the Metro Haynes Manual !!

It does give apuff =on start up ; nothing when caning it down the road.. nothing when you stop, but leave it idle for 30sec the smoke appears ...

I am trying to convince myself that it is nothing to do with the turbo, Pistons, Rings .... Valve stem seals sound good !!

Anycomments on the OIL choice ?

TURBODAVE ... teh oil pressure you mention is pretty much spot on to what I get !!! Hey Hey !!
