Some new pictures in the album under this heading,as usual I cant get them into this post.
I now have the boost turned up to 17psi.When the turbo spools up the ride is really wild-huge acceleration to 6500rpm,it would keep going but I upshift then.In the wet it spins the wheels in 1st 2nd and 3rd when the power comes on.
The cooling seems OK,with a combination of big cooling vents,a big fan,and a timer to run the fan 15 minutes after shutdown.
Two problems-a huge oil leak from the crank rear oil seal-I now have a HUGE breather system but no solution.Second problem is that the turbo does not spool upuntil 4000rpm,and then it's instantly on full boost.Tried fueling, timing and dashpot spring changes, maybe it's cam timing?(a Winter job).
Can't put it on the RR until I fix these issues, then I thought I'd try the guy in Cheltenham that Roger M recommends.
Final Question-I've shaved the back of the car, remote boot lock etc.(sorry Vegard,no bumpers),now I'm wondering whether to shave the door handles/locks.No weather gear,so the inside handle is accessible.Any thoughts?

Yup, rear main a real problem on my Midget too, removed the engine three times to try and resolve it. Ended up removing the dizzy and mounting plate and inserting a massing breather hose into the gapping hole, which did help! Peter May has a rear main conversion - http://www.petermayengineering.co.uk/specialistProducts.htm - but with this conversion you may need the rear main machined.

Also might be worth looking at oil grades (viscosity)? something I haven’t done yet, as thicker oil may help to prevent leaks, but there’s allot more knowledge peeps on this site that can answer that question for you!

I already have the Peter May seal on-it doesn't need machining.Frontline also do one, which is adjustable to centre it properly. As you can see I also put a big breather on the dizzy hole-but I wonder about oil viscosity, using Duckhams 20/50 now.

I also fitted the Peter May rear main kit, but ended up removing it, as with the kit fitted it leaked even more oil!

I did notice your dizzy breather, but I also removed the clamp and sleeve, (which I think you still have in place?), this allowed me to use a even larger bore hose. Is your breath tank well ventilated?

Sorry to disappoint you Carl, but thats the breather tank!I used 22mm tube sleeved and an o ring in the dizzy hole and 3/4 inch ID heater hose to the tank and to atmosphere.
Spridget, what do you use now for a rear seal?

What is with all this rear drive MG nonsense ... thought this was a transverse based site ... ....

yuk, yuk, yuk

poo, poo, poo

Ok ..... all joking aside that is a loverly car you have there ...... makes me miss my old sprite even more .... especially as the guy I sold it to and I have both moved houses (in fact towns) twice since I sold it and he now lives 5 mins walk away .....

P.S. oil leaks from the rear main are the same as those from the rod selector on a transverse box ....

Inevitable!!!!!

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Sorry mate , I was taking the piss and suggesting you did a propper job and dry sumped it . To be honest its the only good solution .
KAD spent ages, trying to sort the leak on Gibsons miget [ I have the engine now , it's the one i plan to turbo ]
KAD used a special material seal that didn't get too hot , which seems to be the problem with the after market kits,
there is a large boss on the back plate and lots of silicone sealer , it doesn.t leak but it's not very elegant .
On a car as nice as yours just dry sump it . no more worries .
That's what I do wiyh mine .

Oops! Thanks Carl,I might give KAD a call.As far as I can see,the seal is directly behind the rear main,so how would dry sumping help?

Steve, went back to the standard arrangement, using liberal doses of Wellseal! But as I mentioned, it leaks allot less oil than when I had my Peter May rear main kit fitted. It’s more a case of a couple of drips now, as apposed to a ‘pool’ before – annoying but acceptable!

Thanks.Following Carl's comment I'll see if I can find an alternative seal setup.Another Winter job!

Please keep me posted, as I would also love to resolve this problem, with out to much trial and error, as I’m sure you will agree taking the engine out now, with all the turbo bits and pieces this quit a larger task!
