Hi,

I've got a few nuts loose or a screw loose one or the other! lol.

My turbo to ex manifold nuts keep falling off, I know this is common for this to happen, and I know there are loads of ways to stop this, but one way I'm trying at the mo is very quick and easy and you'll still be able to get them off if needed.

So before you all say about the other ways of doing it (which I do know cheers)

I've put some good chemical metal around the treads and then done the nuts up tight, I'll keep you upto date if it works.

How do they come off? is it through vibration or expansion of the metal?

i would say a bit of both mate. hot, cold hot cold and the movement of the engine.

When I used lock tabs the nuts didn't come off but they still kept coming loose.

Have you tried using those nuts that have a slightly oval hole in them?

Lol..that'll be the ones. Ditto the flash bugger *tongue*

We use them at work, definitely a good alternative to nyloc nuts with high temp applications!

Matt, I was having exactly the same problem. I now use Nordlock washers under the nuts. They are a two part lock washer and have proved very sucessful. P.M. me your address and I'll pop some in the post for you.

No, they're a bit hard to describe but basically it comprises two separate serated washers which have steps on the mating faces that lock into each other.

n.g.l. I know what you mean, I have some of these on my elbow bolts, they are a clever bit of kit.

Matt you could also try "Schnorr" washers, they are like a serratted belville washer, used on WRC cars, very very good indeed, have used them a lot on rally cars before. Available from Demon Tweeks, look on their site search for "Schnorr" or "Safety Washers".

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

nyloc's do the trick for me! nothing better than some heated plastic goo to stop them vibrating loose!

(to be fair it was all i had at the time and they seem to do the trick!)

I use K nuts all the time at work as i said last week at JohnK's place. Have a deformed thread at the end which nips on the thread of the stud. They do a special high temperature variety as well which i believe is silver.

I've never had a problem!

But I do use new studs and new brass nuts each time.

I don't understand how putting 'whippy whoppy' nuts on there isn't shifting the risk onto the studs unwinding?

There seems to be some very smart solutions for V8 motors for this same problem however.

What is required is to put a bit of stretch into the studs ....... now how you retorque them when hot I'm not sure but it would defiantely help!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Yes of course. Don't you people retorque the head studs?
