Do they really moan about mechanical noise out there other than exhaust notes?? On 19th Jan, 2010 wil_h said:

I dont know about the running noise, but a roller idler gear doesnt chatter on idle like the usual bearing sort |

The problem with our police is that they send you to a official technical control center if they think there is something modified on the car. I don't care about the clattering noise - the whining noise while driving is the problem. My exhaust is very quiet - people tell me they could hear my gears (not exhaust note) long before before seeing my car. Bimmer Twinky headed and turboed A-Series:

I have wondered if whether really drenching the drops in oil with a jet or similar would queiten them down. On 28th Aug, 2011 Kean said:

what about constricting the flow back into the sump so that its always sat 2/3's submerged in oil?

Am I correct in thinking (believe I have read this in a D vizzard book) that if you machine a couple of thou off the tip each gear they will be less noisy?

Would it not lose a little gear strength if you start machining the tops of the gears? On 19th Jan, 2010 wil_h said:

As for SC drops, sprocket will be able to confirm this. Ive got the same minispares drops as him yet mine are alot quieter than his are. He thinks its due to the gasket between block and gearbox. |

Thanks for your comments; I think I will have to speak about this topic with a gear manufacturer - interesting for me to hear that the timken idler is quieter than the needle bearing setup, theoretically there should not be a difference on what kind of bearing the idler is running?!

on someones build on the efi minis forum they have adapted the oil drain from the pump to go into the transfer housing, I think it comes out in a position right above one of the gears. On 28th Aug, 2011 Kean said:

This is a damn good point... If this is for you K1100 engine why don't you run your oil returns from your head to the transfer housing? This is what I am doing but hadn't thought about it making the gears quieter!!!
If it works to make them quieter I'll be gutted, as I like the noise of the drops. lol https://www.facebook.com/pages/Fusion-Fabri..._homepage_panel
