You could write ARSE across your forehead instead.

Saul Bellow - "A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep."
Stephen Hawking - "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."

I guess that is the 3litre 4v model. This is the 2,5litre 2V one.

Ah, what a great thread. How did I miss it? A change down and handbrake always sorts the tailgaters.

Almost the same engine as an Omega - the fuel pump/ecu combination is not BMW stuff.

I wouldn't get one of those with much over 240k kms as that tends to be when the electronics in the fuel pump pack up.

Actually, these days I think that the Audi drivers are as bad.

Any premium brand/repmobile is on the hit list. Plus silly chicks in Binis and 206s.

got an E39... they are not as bullet proof as people say. Most common are electrical glitches.
Coil Packs
Cam and crank sensors
Tailgate on the estate (They Rot)
cooling system on the V8's
Naksil on the early 6 pots late 90's
Dash pixels failing
check for no clunky changes on the auto box.

But still a very comfy car.. and eats the motorway miles. Plus to gain free membership to the Middle Lane Owners Club... :)

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Your very very unlikey to get Nikasil issues on an e39.. e34 or e36 yes, but by e39 it was fixed.

Nikasil is definitely an issue on the E39. I know. My machinist has rebuilt at least ten of these cars and fitted them with iron blocks :)
The diesels are all iron blocks though.

None of the E36/E34s were fitted with aluminium blocks were they?

I agree with Vegard, I'm sure E39's were prone and I think the E46, at least the early ones.

dont know much about the derv ones..

try BMWLAND.co.uk might help.

trust me guys....

Many many e34/36 are alu blocks.

There is no way to replace the nicasil blocks with iron ones... the sloution was to use a later block where they changed the process to Alusil.

Specific engines effected inculde m60 m52. But an M62 or a M52tu are not effected at all (IIRC).

You're wrong Alex. I KNOW that my friends has rebuilt these engines with iron blocks. Maybe it takes some fiddling, I don't know but he's done several.

He might of rebuilt a DIFFERENT engine to replace the nicasil blocks... but you cant just swap the heads from block to block afaik.

I'm used to stand alone on my statements *wink*

However, If you ask them if crank/rods and heads are interchengeable I'm sure they'll concur. Remember the M52 came as both, so you think they change lots? Nope..
