I'm going to make a manifold to fit a GT17 without bulkhead mods for Sturgeo's motor.

It will be in 316 stainless with 10mm thick flanges. The design will be based around my T2 manifold:

The build thread:

I'm thinking about making a batch of five if anyone else is interested.

Cost will be about £300 each. Downpipes are not included at this stage.

Probably get them done by Christmas 2008.

If there is sufficient interest, I will make some time available later in the year to weld them up.

Well, that went down like a lead balloon!

54 views and no replies.

Too expensive?
No track record?
Take too long?

Feedback would be appreciated. *oh well*

Bit pricey I would say Paul, but then I'm not scared of trying it myself...

Basically, I have no objection to the deadline or worksmanship. The price reflects the product, which I have no problem with I'd imagine very labour intensive to produce.

My only problem is that it is the right product at the wrong time. I would be interested in one in a year or two, just not now.

if I didn't already have a mirage manifold, I'd go for this. looks like it would flow better than the mirage (not that it doesn't flow well)

I'm currently debating whether to put my recently acquired GT17 on my 5 port head or just get off my backside and get on with my 8v K head conversion.
So I might be interested...

For stateside folks, it = $600, which is a lot of money*. I like the design, it's perhaps arguably the most superior layout (and perhaps the only way to get a decent layout) which fits in with the 'no cutting bulkhead' principle (bearing in mind there is the mirage, then the plagiarised mirage already on the marketplace).

* by 'a lot of money' - money is of course the same the world over via the excahnge rate mechanism, but for the USA in this case, $600 buys more food and stuff than 300 quid does in the UK, so this is what I refer to it as being 'a lot of money' to spend on a manifold... :)

Thanks for the feedback.

I think that the problem with the cost is my labour rates. I would like to do it at a low cost, but it might cost me two weeks of my regular income, in which case I'm already £1500 out of pocket at the price quoted.

I'll have a look round locally to see if I can find someone that can do the fabrication with a prototype and jig to start them off.

For the amount of time they take I can completely understand where you are coming from Paul, it really is a PITA working with stainless! lol

I would be interested, it looks like the mirrage setup i have will be staying on the mini ive just fitted it to, would be interested in one when I pull my finger out and get on with the minus again, but I have no idea when that will be.

First off, I know a T2 would fit on this without bulkhead mods, but didnt someone on here have issues fitting a gt17 between the block and the bulkhead? (I might be mistaken??)

Im the sort whos not bothered about a bulkhead box, so will probably just graft a gt17 onto the metro manifold eventually, but if I wasnt, something like this would be the next port of call

Yeah Bat tried it and it wouldn't quite fit. That was on a mirage manifold though, so it may work with these ones of Pauls!

I think that I need to make a couple to start with. One for Sturgeo and another for someone who can prove that it is capable of 200hp plus.

With a proven track record, the percieved value will be higher.

If anyone is desparate then let me know and we can see what we can do.

As regards fitting, as Bat found out, the GT17 will not fit on the Mirage manifold as it fouls the block. I intend to swing the turbo flange to provide clearance. As far as I am aware, there is enough space for the compressor housing as long as you get the angle correct.

Was it the block it fouled Paul? I thought it was the crossmember as he didnt have a bulkhead box? I will admit I may be talking crap tho, please feel free to correct when im wrong.

It was the cam sensor boss on the back of the MPi block that fouled in Bat's case.

I'll be checking for clearance, block and crossmember at the weekend.

My car is a 93 K reg which makes at a Mk5? I think that the engine sits slightly further forward than the Mk1-4. Can anyone confirm?

ooo, i am getting one of these then...

can we also check on the black mini for clearance as that should be a mk4?

Looking at mine (even though I have a bulkhead box) im sure it would fit without a box so I think it is doable.

I filled my compressor housing ID plate off to gain the extra clearance.

If you behave yourself and keep your bedroom tidy - LOL.

The black one and the Thirty are Mk4s - is yours?

As above, committed to T3, bulkhead already cut and box (nearly) fitted.

As for price/labour rates, a couple of mates of mine, one of whom is a coded welder and brilliant at TIG started doing this sort of stuff for the Jap market, one-off specials especially turbo manifolds in tubular stainless, set up their own web site etc.... Couldn't make it pay, just too many hours involved, so now they only do it for themselves and friends.

Picture of a GT1752 in place as promised. Just a few millimetre clearance on the compressor housing. A light touch with a BFH will sort that out.
