Always used the AA, never had a problem. I get it for free (ish) from my bank.

RAC work fine for me. Recovered me home and arranged collection of my car from home to a garage of my choice.

Joint policy with the girlfriend. Good value to.

I've had RAC cover for about 5 years now, touch wood haven't needed to use it recently, but in the past I've had a couple of 100 mile recoveries back home, a poxy shit Range Rover and a trailer with a 205 on all recovered 200 miles, and also a rolled 205 collected from outside the gates of Cadwell Park and delivered home. You might say I've had my moneys worth out of it.
I've got the "recovery" option, as standard they won't take you home, only to a nearby garage.

I used to use the AA but got nothing but terrible service from them, now I use RAC and the staff couldn't go further out of their way to help you. Had to call them out about 6 times so far this year lol.

Also they helped out transporting my mini from my house to my work for free, it had been sitting for months before hand, lol

Britannia for me, used once in anger, couldn't fault them - they seem to have arrangments with lots of independant garages so were very quick. Personal/family policy, recovery home or garage (my choice).

AA before that, used once in anger - hopeless... when I phoned I specifically told them it was the 4x4 model, "Don't worry Sir, it shows that on our database". Two hours later, small van with a towing dolly arrives...
Driver - "I didn't think it was right but control assured me it was the 2WD model...." Another hour's wait while he went back to get the low loader....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Out of choice I used RAC for years and they were great, much better then the AA, however I now get AA free for me and the wife through the bank so I use them.

Horndean - Near Portsmouth

My experience with AA was a bad one, car broke down in an underground carpark in the busiest part of portsmouth - on a bank holiday.

4 hours after waiting for the truck to arrive, after i told them it was underground - theyd sent some massive thing that wouldnt fit down there, another 4 hours later theyd sent a smaller one, which still didnt fit.

Had to get dollys under the car and a tow out from a land rover to the truck that was waiting at the entrance to the underground car park, closing one lane of busy traffic!! Nightmare

Then just to make it worse the winch sheard off the towing eye on the front of the car - so we had to push this clio up the out ramp and then up the flatbad (they didnt send a dolly truck ffs - a flatbed!!!).

12 hours later i was home. Which was 20 mins away from where i was stuck in the first place. *Shooting*

RAC from now on.

avoid breakdown with insurance, especially with places like direct line and tesco, small print normally dictates a roeadside repair or max 10 mile tow only, not worth the paper its not written on

We have AA, we have pretty high cover but not the very highest one. We have homestart, roadside and recovery, but not the hotel room and hire car bit if I recall correctly.

However, I'm beginning to wonder if we're paying too much for it. This years was £170, I'm sure it wasn't always that much!

That does seem a lot. I have roadside free with the bank and top up to relay (recovery) for £30. This is fro me and the misses.

I think that the insurance free recovery work the same as the bank. It is the basic package and you can pay a little more for the stuff you want. Works out cheaper in the end.

Read this: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/roadside-recovery Don't waste ridiculous amounts on the AA and RAC when you can get full relay cover for £36! The only catch is you have to pay for the recovery/repair and claim it back.

i had to pay for a recovery once when my AA membership lapsed and i forgot, was only about 10 miles but cost me £90. its alot to be out of pocket and that one wee breakdown would have paid for my memebership. all the brakedowns in my last post were 50-100 miles from home. i dont have engouh cash jsut lying around to pay for that kind of recovery while i wait for it back.

Thanks for the replies.

We have AA roadside and relay which cost us £126 to renew for joint membership.

We've not used it since we got rid of our knackered old audi 80 2 years ago, and the renewal seemed alot for something we hardly use, but I guess we can't afford to risk being without it. May look at switching to the RAC next time.

Cheers

I had Green Flag, but always, always read the small print ,cos I had to pay £150 to get home when they refused to come out because "we dont cover cars over 16 years old sir"This with their top level of cover and personal cover on top.I,m now with the RAC.
