I finally got all my stuff back from the machinest today, so can get on and build the engine next week.

I rebuilt the gearbox yesterday as well, although got stuck on shimming the diff up.

I have been busy fitting the remaining bits of the roll cage today as well.

some pics of the new bling:)

At the moment its an n/a engine.

1275cc
std turbo pistons
minispares lighetened steel flywheel
kent 276 cam
1.5:1 roller tip rockers
Fully worked head by Benross
10.5:1 comp ratio
Weber 45 DCOE
Oh, and megajolt

If I get bored and want more power, the head can be ported out, and I will bung the turbo set up on.

personally i would have gone for a wilder cam with that setup. especially as your using a megajolt and dcoe.

I'm with Anton, a 286 will be much tastier.

Dammit! Now you two have got me thinking. Would the 286 produce much more mid and top end then the 276?

I found the 286 is night and day over the 276. I spent ages trying different timing, and never made as much mid / top end power as when i bit the bullet and fitted a 286 and timed it in at the reccomended figure.

This was over 10 years ago mind, and I didn't check the individual cam lobes like I do nowadays, so it might have been less than optimal - but I concluded a 276 has all the bad habits of a 286 (lumpy idle), and none of the good habits (Torque / Power).

Only my findings of course...

I would agree with TurboDave. A friend and I years ago always use to compete against each other, he went for a 276 so I went for a 286. It wasn't long before his engine was apart again and a 286 fitted. The 276 never really excelled in any area.

I also had a weber 45 fitted and the engine was producing 96 bhp at the wheels.

yup i had the 276.. lasted only a few months before it came out for a 286... i loved that engine. Just purred along like a normal standard lump then at 2800ish it let rip

hi minimole23

i'm planning on slowly doing a turbo and currently have a cr of 10.5:1 like yourself however what boost or power do you expect/what was your decision in going such hi cr?

i know theres this fine line of decent cr and torque and i myself am having difficulties deciding what is the best bet but i'd thought at least 9 for a good mix?

thanks T

Taz, The comp ratio was going to be dropped to 9:1 if it is turbo'd. But now I'm going for the 286 cam it would be unsuitable for a turbo engine. the 276 apparantly works quite well in a turbo engine.

I will build a turbo engine at a later date.

Well, recently its been much arse scratching and little progress. I have been waiting for some bits to arrive, and am still waiting for some vandervel main bearings, so cant really do a lot now. I have been torquing new bolts, plastiguaging the big ends and gapping piston rings.

I also have some more tasty goodies curtosy of Benross (the head) and Richie(the weber). So thanks guys.

Well, been a bit slow recently working a number of festivals and what not, but the block box and head will all be firmly attatched by the end of tonight ready to start transplanting it all tomorrow.

Here are a couple more pictures of the lot assembled, this is my first engine build and I hope the first start all goes well. I have been meticulous with everything so cant forsee any problems. If it goes wrong though I will not have the money to build a similar engine for years now due to being a student!

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Well, I finally got the lot bolted together and the engine in now, I have had it running for about 5 minutes now but had to turn it off as the rockers were hitting the top of the standard rocker cover.

I felt a big guilty mutilating the bulkhead for the weber box but now its done, its a small step towards that for the bulkhead box when I got turbo power.

I just hope it now holds together - I shouldn't be so paranoid as I have been meticulous with everything but another 15 mins should reveal the outcome.

dude I dont mean to pee on your parade but is your box welded in? If not the Mot may not go your way I had one of my builds fail on that small over sight.

a few probing questions at your MOT station may be in order.

Also may I add that I have a 276 in my turbo and I sware the standard cam was more fun*frown*

Its gonna get welded in when I have the time, Its just i'm on a real tight schedule!

I was going to put a 286 in, but then 3 engine builders talked me out of it!

it really wouldnt take long to weld your box in when the engine was out, and it really does need welding in to put the strength back in the bulk head.

engine build looks good

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
