Ok so its been a while since I have posted anything about this project. A lot has happend since last, infact, I have scrapped the original block and started again from scrach. I just was not happy with the original one

MPi block. Deck completely plugged off for dry deck head assembly, using brass plugs and steel where new stud holes intersect. All new stud locations now have plugs fitted to ensure perfect full form threads.

Offset bored to line up cylinders perfectly center to center with the BMW head. Stud holes drilled and tapped to move the head forward on the block to line up the combustion chambers centrally over the cylinders. All that done on CNC to CAD drawings, so Perfect!

Steel liners fitted to return bore to standard 70.61mm and 1275cc.

Block skimmed so pistons sit flush with the deck.

Four bolt main cap fitted, line bored and honed.

Crank case machined for clearance of steel h section conrods.

Under crown piston oil cooling jets fitted.

Core plugs have 'safety' retention screws fitted, Probibly not nescisary but it looks cool *tongue*

Holes drilled and tapped into old tappet chest for oil drains for both head and the turbo in the very near future

Engine/ Gearbox bolts enlarged to M8.

Head modified as per normal plus all coolant passages welded up for dry deck assembly, adapters welded on back end for coolant and oil drain

Crankshaft Wedged, Bladed, cross drilled, Toughened, balanced to the nth degree.

Steel h section conrods modified to give propper clearance on little end with pistons due to the offset bore.

Hepolite 19320 Powermax Cooper S pistons machined for valve clearance. Total Seal gapless piston rings. Teflon buttons fitted to prevent fully floating wrist pins scuffing the bore.

MPi cam shaft machined to remove all lobes except the cam sensor lobe

Ultra light flywheel and backplate, orange diaphragm, and AP racing organic friction plate.

Final dry build done, final clean to do and then assembly.

More to come in the next couple of weeks as i build it up. Some pictures dont show all of the machining as they were taken before. Just need to get this finished, ive been at it since Feb 2005 LMFAO *Rofl!*

Thanks guys, its been a long time in the thinking and the making :)

El Potter, Its NA first, turbo later. It'll be finished when its finished, LOL, but im setting a target no later than the Wirral Llandudno run mid January *laughing*

Mini13, The holes in the tappet chest are indeed oil drains for the head and the turbo *wink*

Wolfie,Yeh, everyonee seems to think that the MPi stuff is shite, Not saying you are though *wink*. The block is actualy one of the better bits that Rover redesigned :)

The core casting is much cleaner too

There are a few of the Miglia guys running these blocks because of the oil filter and lack of dizzy.

That all looks very nice job. But i think i'm giving up on makeing a good job of my block and engine ect, only for the G box to F_ck it self every where and put shit all around the nice new engine.

Matt, you have to start some where. and its no good starting with shite *wink*

Tell me this though, when you had yours on the dyno and made the 310bhp, were you actualy trying to see how much power it would take to break the engine rather than the box. I know there may be other reasons, but was it on impulse? A fuck it, lets do it and see sort of thing knowing full well thee possible consequencies :)

Gearbox reliabiliy is one reason im limiting to 200bhp max with he turbo, plus the fact that Jimster as only found out this week, 240bhp would be a right bastard on the country lanes, especialy round here.

As for last comment had a funny day so sorry for the neg comment. Just enoys me that i can do an engine that takes it but i can't buy a box with the right gearing that will. Well when we got 286 in the middle of 06, thoughts then turned to getting 300 if possible, It was then planned for the end of that year if still running ok, to see what power we could make and if any thing would let go.
Yes i had no real probs around 200 ish break.

Hmmm.... I wonder how much you'd have to offer them (or rather quaife) to make you a unique headset ratio to take it to a 2.5 or whatever...

Yes that would be then only answer, or to have a 5 or 6 speed dog type box with a lower diff ratio.
but Quaife said the swifty has the rights ect to the dogbox.

They have the rights for sure - but they also have the drawings. If you buy a kit from swifty, you should - in theory- be able to get two new gears manufactured.

The trubly is Carl Swifty make a big thing about how there boxes don't clonk when you put it in gear, is this one you speak about the same sort of design, as being a road only car i can't start haing a harsh gear box is you see my meaning.

As dave said, I drove my car to the MOT garage and back, and it was not untill I got home that remembered I had the dog box fitted, I didn't notice any difference.

your welcome to have a spin in my car Matt.

Nic was playing with my box (or er) on the weekend, although not on the road the car was on the lift at the time.

Your comment was not taken as negative by me at least*happy*

Matt, Just a thought, if reliability of the gearbox is such an issue, surely it would be in your interest to sacrifice some of the drivebility of the 2.9 diff, move up to something a little more accomodating with a dog box kit such as this Swifty one*oh well*

I hate to think what in the way of virtual weight the gearbox is seeing with a 2.9 FD*surprised*

LMFAO

Thing is these days, if you have car keys in your pocket, are under the influence of alcahol, you can loose your licence, even if you are not even considering driving!! Its a bit like the film Minority Report, you are arrested before you do the crime*oh well*

Wonder how many of you will still be rat arsed this Sunday on your excursion down the strip *laughing*

I have a feeling Jimbo and TD will be rat arsed Sunday moring as well but for a very different reason*tongue*
