We were competing at Harewood at the weekend, not been there before and it was very wet, got one dry-ish run at the end of the day and managed a 67second pass (not sure how good that is) but jolly god fun.

Anyway, during practice, we broke the output shaft on the LSD, not heard of this before, any one else bust one?

It's been in 3 or 4 seasons and done a maximum of a few hundred miles.

Cheers to Carl for offering one out of the Twinny (sp?) to get us going again, although I sent Ben home in the end (200 mile round trip) to get a spare from his car.

I've never heard that they've broken, but then again, I've never heard anyone broken what you've done either. Pots are said to be less power sapping mechanicly.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

hardy spicers have the bigger output shaft (so i've been told)

pot joints however do have less rolling resistance.

I have seen JKD shafts twisted at the splines on the hardy spicer end and also the same shafts sheared in half. That was on a Stage Rally. So anything is possible

It is an interesting failure. It has failed on the pot-joint side, which is basically the same size as every other pot-joint output shaft, be it on a standard diff, cross-pin, whatever.

they're £65 each too!

i really dont think this should have happened, its good nothing else suffered from it, but i would def be onto minispares to raise this issue

*edited to add*

also....

because of where the break is, looking at one of my JKD outputs, its a one piece affair, and the splines end just before the flange.

the ones MS sell seem to be a 2 piece affair, with the pot joint side spline grooves undercutting it slightly...

That just sounds dangerous, especiallly if it was wet.

That failure is all wrong for a driveshaft if i'm looking at it right. It appears way too brittle - almost like its had too much case depth in heat-treat.
I'm suspicious to be honest.

Luckily it was dry, in all honesty it wasn't as much of a monster as I thought it would be, quite well behaved TBH. But fuck me it felt quick with some scenery close by as opposed to the strip where there is nothing near you.

78 secs is shite for any mod prod mini owner up harewood.

67 is good going for a first time out,

Will, did you put a tyre on the dirt , then break the output when it grabbed the tarmac on finding the road.

Ben was driving when it broke. He was accelerating out of orchard through the farm and it went.

Considering how wet it was the amount of torque going through it at the time was lower than say at the start on a sticky day.

As for times, we started in puddles and I ran a 79, then a 74 in slightly drier conditions, then the last run of the day was a 67.14. Considering it was still a bit damp and it was completley different grip levels than any other run I was very happy.

Rick, I went to Prescott from my mums which is only 15 min away, at a guess though from Rotherham it is probably a comfortable 2 1/2hr run.

To be honest any power and the wheels were spinning. Going onto the grass would have made little difference to the grip levels. I think the shaft has just fatigued over the years and all that wheel spinning did it in.

I had a shite weekend anyway. After a failed run with the shaft, I took a trip across the grass and then the clutch decided to stop working so another lost run. My final run was still quite damp compared to Wil's final run (he was always about 20 mins after me and it always worked in his favour weather wise, another reason to have a car each). I am full of excuses, but I never got a good confident run all weekend.

Perhaps it was jsut an un-noticed flaw in the part? weakening the part as a whole? Not a satisfactory answer as there is no practical solution to prevent it hapening again however :(

i had a similar failure of my driveshafts, im no metalurgist but i did some light reading and came to the conclusion that the twisted, jagged features were signs of a fatugue failure where it sheers a small portion of the shaft eatch time it is loaded up.

We lost one of these the weekend before last. It was bran new Item s I had fitted it the night before, the driver of the car took of from the line got a lot of wheel spin then caught the curbing then lost all drive, I was sure it was because he hit the curb and the massive juddering that went trough the shaft as he wheel spun on the curb caused it to fail maybe not could this be an inherent flaw in these spigot's ??
regards,
Paul.
