I am wondering about using solid engine mounts to reduce the engine movment because I am worried it will rock forward to much and hit the front rad. Would this be a very bad idea to solid mount the engine on a road going mini? I will use it a bit for track days but mainly back road thrastes.
Thanks

it will be fine, but i took mine off as the vibrations were doing my head in.

whats up with your engine steady to make it rock so much?

Forget solid mounts for a road car, your teath will fall out.

To stop the engine moving, use nylon bushes not rubber in the top mount. And have bot the standard top mount and an additional one (on the thermostat housing) fitted.

can't use the top mount to the thermostat due to the supercharger belt. Which is my problem. Are the yellow polly engine mounts any good?

Steve showed me his gearbox mounts. i have done the same they mount on the back of the gearbox onto the back of the subby. i have one on each side with polly bushes, then the one on the front of the gearbox, plus the one above the transfer casing which iam making rose jointed and the engine is solid. i cant use the "ultimate " engine steady type ones because my bulkhead mods prevent this.

I had wondered about the Avon bar one but couldn't find it on the web site.
I've not seen a mount from the rear of the gear box to the subframe, got any pics?

They wear out way too fast. Less than 2,000km and I've had to replace them. Gone back to standard bushes.

These are fine as opposed to the yellow poly bushes which seem to have been introduced into the conversation.

Richie,

I had the same problem as you fitting my Avonbar waterpump type steady.

I ended up making a different plate to fit the bulkhead. Works a treat!

I'll send some pics if your engine is still floppy without it.

Rather than making a new topic ill dig up this one. Would polybusches and extra engine box steady work to keep the engine from moving more than 3mm? I would make them out of metric 12 or14 bar to make them adjustable. And would i need to reinforce something to make it happen?

All I've ever had is one of the solid rose jointed steadies in place of the std top one, and a normal gearbox one. No noticeable extra noise, no engine movement at all.

the only issue I ever had was the bracket snapping off the bulkhead but that was more due to rot i think.

I swapped to solid mounts after I kept splitting the left hand standard one at pod even with extra tie bars.

I wouldn't want them in a road car though as the extra vibrations make the car stupidly loud inside!

This is the exhaust. Having aprox 6mm of play. But want to heat wrap it to so... engine already tilted forward aprox 10mm.

That is rather close, i read somewhere that the engine is best tilted forward at a ?? Certain degree.. are you going to try tilt it more.??

I would be worried about the mounts, bolts and gearbox casing suffering from fatigue cracks with solid mounts.

I would fit a water pump/thermostat mounted engine steady up top and a pair of steadies from the front of the gearbox to the subframe.

Well i can tilt it more but then i start to have a problem with the alternator getting close to the front. Tought of remaking the exhaust because with this one i had to calculate for a remote servo. How ever not longer planning to use that it still is quit some work to build a complete new one from scratch

I had the engine sat on the oem rubber mounts with 2 minispares lower gearbox steadys with poly bushes in and a solit rose jointed top steady and solid mounted subframe
It wasnt that bad imo if you consider how low and stiff i had the car
Still managed to bend them though :)

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I used to have two top steady bars, two bottom steady bars all with poly bushes and the engine still rocked when i changed gear and spoilt any enjoyment of driving the thing.
I didnt fancy solid bushes on a road car because of all the vibration.
I found this thread which offers a good solution I've not seen done before

I've got a DNS top mount with an black poly bush in the bulkhead end and have 4 steadies on the gearbox all with poly bushes.

Still wouldnt mind a top right steady, no problems with noise.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Have you moved the engine forward to the MPI position?
