Please someone put me out of my misery...

I am in the process of removing engine from car (first time). Am trying to remove the gearchange remote control housing (rod change type). Spent an hour trying to undo the nut connecting the fork to the diff, and attempting to punch through the roll pin.

Apart from smashing my head on the floorpan, partially rounding the nut and breaking my wrist, I did not achieve anything.

As a result I am pissed off to the extent where I could actually murder someone.

Is there a magical removal proceedure that im not aware of?

the roll pin should be the easy one. Put the selector into reverse and it should be much more easily accessible.

As for the bolt, its probibly rusted to the metalastic bush and may require the use of a saw or grinder.

When I rebuilt the Mini in 2006, that particular bolt took me almost an hour to remove by cutting it with A HACK SAW BLADE ALONE (whoops caps), its no good when you are restricted to the little space under the car that axle stands give

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

cut the bolt heads off, then you can try and punch the bolt through enough to hook off the fork, or at the worst pry it off, worst case you could cut through the fork itself, sort that when the engine is out and replace the rod

later forks have a slot so you can put the bolt halfway in, then 'slot' it ontop, then push it through the rest of the way, earlier ones are a right pita!!

I fear I may be having fun tommorrow with a hacksaw. Im just hoping the wd40 does its job tonight.

do you use a special tool to punch the roll pin out?? I tried with with a small top tool, and tried to hammer it out. May end up damaging it are they available new??

To punch the roll pin out, use a parallel punch, the same diameter as the roll pin.

The trouble is someone previous may have used a pin punch, or even a nail, and spread the ends of the roll pin.

to get the roll pin i always used tiny wathcmakers screwdivers (bear with me) ... u know how they come in a pack. well get one that fits snugly right through the roll pin but whose shoulder buts upp against teh roll pin. this meens it hold itself in place so you can have a good swign with a hammer and boht hands .. once the pin starts to moove jsut use a regular drift :)

Wathcmakers screwdriver???

Never heard of it - but if i can find the tool sounds like a plan!!

Not sure of the tool i was using - but it undoes the sun roof handle. Circular end with lots of bits around the edge...

Roll pins are always the bane whe it come to removing the engine. If you can get hold of one use a long 5/32 tappered punch you will be able to brace it against the housing and keep some distance between your fingers and the BFH. As for the bolt get a pry bar on it and lots of WD40 and take your time it will give eventualy they all do

But even on axle stands the floor pan is still that little bit to close to the floor to manovure the bfh not to mention the axle stands getting in the way!!!!

How heavy is your hammer? I had the same issues until my brother passed me a 8lb club hammer not much of a swing but the momentum saw to that pesky pin. once it starts to move your home free

If at first you dont succeed use a bigger hammer!*happy*

Which one are you trying to do - the vertical one or the horizontal one ???

I initially tried to punch through the vertical pin (in neutral if that changes things). Then when I looked at the haynes, realised i was trying to punch through the wrong pin, so changed to the horizontal one.

The horizontal one is closest to the diff housing right??? But they are both pigs.

What does the vertical one hold???
