There was a post somewhere about how much an a series weighs, I've searched and can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Reason for asking, the engine is coming out of the mini and I don't have an engine crane. Was thinking of hooking something up to the beams of my garage but I want to be sure it will take the weight.

Should be OK providing the beams are decent size, say 4x2, and in good condition. I know plenty of people who have done the same over the years.

Use a decent bit of pole to spread the load across at least 4 beams in the roof space.

My only other concern is if the engine weighs approx 22 stone that's more than double what I weigh. When I put a bit of rope around it, then around a bit of scaffold on my beams without any form of gearing I could just swing off the damn thing and surely the engine won't budge??

Might have to just bite the bullet and get a crane.

There is a 4 inch square beam mid span across my garage, and I haven't made the roof collapse yet using a block and tackle attatched to it.

Looking at my beams they look pretty flimsy, don't want to risk it. Apart from getting the driveshafts out everything is off the engine ready to pull it out. Going to go to the motor factors this week and see how much a lift is.

just been looking at that. Not sure I've got space to store it.

Block and tackle got me thinking though, there's got to be a way to mount one of those somewhere

We lift them in and out by hand without the head on.

You have to split the balls joints and release the driveshafts.

Jack the car up high. Put two or three concrete blocks under the gearbox. Lower the car. Put another stack of blocks in front the car. Lift engine across. Easy.

That sounds like a good way of doing it paul what do you grab hold of without the head on though?

Was going to take the head off but 2 things were stopping me...

1) what to strap a hoist too (had planned to wrap some rope around the exhaust manifold)

2) I can't get to the clamp on the oil drain hose from the turbo.

Front pulley and wok basically. Lots of grunting involved.

last time i took it out without a hoist, ric , i took off the head ,and then slung a scaffold pole across the top of the bay with a rope around the engine ,then i took one end and v took the other and we lifted it out like that ,over the front of a non flip front mini . the rope was about a foot and a half from me ,and about 5 ft from v ,so i had most of it ,it was quite heavy that way ,but just about doable .the truss support comes off on wednesday.
