how do chaps, i have a nissan silvia the early s12 model with multi-point injection

it turns over fine, good spart & fuel, it has a crank position sensor in the dizzy, dont know if anyone is familer????

fuel pump is werrrrrrinnng away so i think thats okk, i have a walbro 255ltr per hour one on order anyway!

what can i check? i'm a bit stuck but need to persevere & get her going! it was running fine i feel somat may have broken down in the system somewhere

i have changed plugs & regapped them, new leads dizzy cap & rotor, fuel filter, it was running fine before changing these items but it was difficu;t to start, seemed as though fuel was'nt getting through or the spark was'nt igniting, but i've checked these & they seem ok, i have a multimeter to do other checks but i'm not sure where to start??????? any help is appreciated

double and triple check all of your timing mate. that is where my money lays.

oooo actually, plug the alarm back in. lots of cars defualt immobolise if the unit is removed. they need a signal from the alarm to turn the imboliser off.

it was running fine before & after the alarm/imobilisor, it is an aftermarket one! & the car does'nt have a OE alarm/imobilisor

can i check the timing when its just turning over??????

gonna go by a timing gun as i dont have one & !!!!!!!!!!should!!!!!!!

i previously had a boost leak on the intake to throttle bodie which made it misfire really bad! i nearly ended up stranded on my way home from oxford the other day!!! to say i was clenched was an understatement!!! lol

set it to TDC on No1 and check it all over, get your firing order, and check the leads are in the right order. if they are then it should fire (if this is the problem) and then you can check the ignition timing with a light to get it correct.

leads ae correct, firing the same as mini, 1342,

i've just read in the manual lol dont laugh to hard *happy* the ecu has a self diagnose setup on it!

you count the LED flashes which corrispond to a code in themanul! then that sort of narrows the problom down,

am i right in thinking if the crank angle sensor is fooobared the motor wont start????
will any other sensors stop the motor starting?

i think its quite a common fault

i've took all the leads to sensors on & off a few times so they are clean & making good contact, its just spinning over & not catching on aything to fie :/

seems odd as i've only changed servicable items?????

Usually it won't start as the crank angle pickup is needed to do the timing (is this the error code you are getting ???)

Some will be absolutely required, others that fail may just put the EMS into "limp home" mode (fairly obvious when it happens).

Fault codes by flashing light codes are usually very reliable - so long as you have the table to look up what the code means.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

i hope it aint the crank angle as in the manual it says its a whole new dizzy to sort it as the crank angle senser is in the dizzy! gonna have a look on think automotive if they have a simular part that i can retrofit if thats the trouble!

my 1st foray into fixing a fuel injection car is pissing me off! it seems if it is'nt one think the other bit is knackered!
i cant stand it in this cold weather!

in the plug to the crank angle sensor you should have 12v 0v and signal going between 0&(probably)5v.

you chan check the 12v with the volt meter easy enough, and the 0v with the buzz setting on the meter.

providing you have the power and ground, can you get at the third pin with the plug connected? if so se if you get a change in voltage when you spin the engine over.

mini13 i'll give that a go 2moro sounds a good idea there!!! the voltages you state are the same as in the manual so i'll see if i can get to the connections!

its annoying as it was driving superb the other day! & i have/had plans to fit a better intercooler + other bits n bobs :/

if it were me if this is a known common issue i would break into the wire with some form of connector so i could measure there in the future :)

Did you run the engine for a very short time then switch it off before it really got up to temp?

It may be flooded, especialy in this cold weather. I have had this on a Nissan Micra, and the Wifes Seat Arosa does the same thing. Its easy to stop it happening, make sure there is some heat in the engine before you switch it off.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

is it a CA18et? never worked on one of them before, however take a step back and start with the basics.. dont skip anything here on a hunch or because you "know" its ok.

is there definately 100% a spark? i meen lead out, plug in it crank and see a spark?

now, if these have a similar drive to the "dizzy" (well cam position sensor) on later silvias, they can go in any oritentation. someone may have done this then mooved all the ht leads round on the dizzy cap to compensate. did you mark the old ones up? or did you just go by the writing on the cap? lesson here.. always mark!

so we have a spark, but not 100% sure its at teh right time. dont swing the dizzy, it should fire up in its old position.

crank the engine, and listen to the injectors with a screwdriver, do they click? if so the ecu is firing them. also pull a plug and see if its wet with fuel.

afm wont stop the car firing up, but it wont run with no afm.

no petrol whiffs says to me you have a fueling issue. its an old jap motor, wiring is brittle, make sure all the injectors are recieving a +12v feed with the ignition on. also check over any wires which you may have mooved, nissans are shocking for brittle looms, the exterior insulator stays ok but the wire inside jsut breaks and goes open circuit :)

likely candidates are : power to injectors, power to coil, cam position sensor or power feed to it. if the fuel pumps whirring away everything else should not prevent the engine starting.

sorry for the rambling nature!

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)
