Yesterday I fitted the same thing exactly, but not to a mini. You have already screwed the probe to the sensor so you have seen that it is a solid piece of brass,so I dont see why you cant cut it down(But dont cry to me if it costs you another £25)

the bit that does the sensing is usually at the very tip. at your own risk.

As both the above...

If the sensing element is in the body and it's just a bit of brass screwed in to transfer the heat, cut it how long you like, BUT, if the long bit has the sensing element in it, it WILL be at the tip......

Don't the installation instructions make it clear where the actual sensing element is ???

The probe is just pushed through the fins on the rad, between the gills, and is screwed on to the body by the person installing it.It has just a small thread formed on one end and there is no evidence that it contains any sensing device -how could it transfer its response ?. I,m pretty sure its just a brass rod to transfer the heat to the body where the sensor is.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

From what you say it will be a brass rod that could in theory be cut and not directly damage a sensor; it seems, as you say, that the brass part is just for transferring heat to the sensor.

I would be worried that it would affet the switching point. However, if it sticks throug hthe grill i.e. it's not within the rad then it's not going to be doing much anyway.

You could experiment a bit. Stick it in pan of boiling water, but just the tip. and see what happens to the switch. Then see if there is any differance by sticking say half of it in.

cutting it will probably throw the calibration out, and sometimes these probes are hollow with nitrogen in them.

Just a thought but wouldn't the manufacturer have saved the material costs and made it shorter if it didn't need to be that long in the first place? I think the calibration argument is looking good.

It's not the age that makes me creak it's the mileage

Can you not fit it from the front so it sticks into the engine bay instead of out through the grille?

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Ten minutes at tickover should do it - see if the fan cuts in.
