Yo,

Froglet just failed it's MOT on structure - the boot floor is missing, inner front wings, and rear subframe has been choppped (rear crossmember taken out).

So, two things

A) Is he right?
B) What can I do? :(

put in a cage? is the boot floor missing? i.e. nothing there or is it a carbon replacement? i wouldn't have said inner front wings were cruicial, I personally think thats a bit harsh!

From what I have read boot floor replacement is a grey area.

On the rear subframe has anything been welded in accross the back to replace the rear bit being removed?

Do you have brace bars to the front subframe mounts to replace the inner wings? - I believe this is specifically mentioned in the MOT testers manual.

Your problem is that anywhere you take it will see it's new fail on the computerised system. You need somebody who has tested it before with those mod's.

Then once it's tested again, complain to VOSA that he is being unnecesarily harsh and ripping people of.

I'm guessing it has peviously passed with those mods and the regulations haven't changed, so he has no room to move. There are details on the back of the fail sheet if you want to appeal/complain.

You're not the first to make these mods....

He's a nice guy - passed the last frog no problem, and isn't charging me for the test due to abandoning it.

No brace bars at the front, or the rear. Only one inner wing is cut away at the front. The boot is just a hole.

Hmm i can see why he failed the rear? Maybe an ali plate or something would help? sealed and rivited? maybe? but a different test center would be best? Did you ask him what he'd like to see back in there?

I'd say it definitely needs some brace bars at the front to appease the tester, also at the rear to replace the removed subframe section. As much as anything else- why not go talk to the tester and see if he would be happy to pass it if you did these things?

Fucking annoying! I thought as it was OK when tim had it, I'd be OK. Cant help getting annoyed, if I'm putting brace bars in, I may as well flip front it and what not. Sigh.

Asking the Tester what he would like to see to replace the "missing strength" would be what I would do.

However, it makes you wonder whether the whole test "rules" are being tightened up for modified cars to get us ready for (expensive) SVA type tests for anything that deviates from standard.

If you believe what you read on the web, of course, but it does seem a lot of other EU countries are much more restrictive than us as to what you can modify......

i would have thought brace bars and a brace in the rear subby would be enough and easy to do?

I've just dropped it off with another MOT tester - friend of a friend. It's booked in for tomorrow. I shoewd him round the car to see if it was even worth putting through.

He looked around it, and suggested that it'd be no problem if I had put some ally sheet over the boot floor. He didn't seem bothered about the strength, but more about a bulkhead between the exhaust and fuel tank.

He said it's a grey area and he's going to read up on it tonight before the test.

We'll see.

I thought the boot floor would be an issue, ali sheet all the way, or a carbon floor?

Horndean - Near Portsmouth

A guy local to me had stolen a road sign and rivited it to the outer sections of his boot floor to cover up his hole.

Cheap weight reduction, you could try that Alex? *tongue*

I know you need brace bars at the front. But didnt know about the boot floor glad I havent cut mine out yet. Did he not notice youve got now engine? Why not take it to your local SVA place and ask them what would be required?

secure some ali plate over the boot floor, add a brace bar, get the pass certificate, then on the way home the parts you just fitted accidentally get *stolen* out of your car, and what a shame its back to how it was before *wink*
