I have spent the last year getting my mini city turbo'd bought a tested metty engine fitted the intercooler(thanks Shane) sorted the megajolt etc etc etc, and I can just about see the finishing line.

EXCITEMENT

But then

I took my daily drive MINI to be tuned and whilst in conversation i mentioned my turbo project and what I was hoping for him to tune it when it was done. Well the guy at the tuners questioned why I had fitted an intercooler and why I have I bothered fitting the megajolt, in fact he seemed a little pissed off that I'd done this and he pointed out that Rover had spent millions developing the turbo engine and how someone with little knowledge (me) can possibly make a better job of it is talking bollox.

Suddenly I felt like I was getting bollocked, you know sort of feeling, when your old man has given you his old car and you've proceeded to fuck it up, by this point i was heading for the door. but a couple of things are still lodged in my head.

He says that now I've fitted an intercooler all I have done is create turbo lag whereas the rover install had none. is this true?
Secondly he was adamant that i should remove the megajolt and put the dizzy back on because it is his experience that the dizzy will time up 60% more acurately than any electronic box of tricks (his choice of words)

TERROR.

opinions eagerly awaited

Sounds like a total fuckwitt to me living in the past. I certainly wouldn't be taking any car of mine to him to be tuned.
A decent intercooler install will add minimal lag, & will produce more power & reliability. A properly installed megajolt is better than a dizzy in every way, he's obviously not up to date on this.

Cheers for that, but I made that decision after about 3 minutes of talking to him but has he got a point regarding the ic and megajolt?

You would expect that sort of ethos from an old school garage but this guy was about 40 if a day. Maybe he worked for Rover as a "technician" at some point and it may really piss him off that someone has spent many lonely nights in the garage figuring stuff out and building something that works better than what they could come up with even though they threw millions of pounds at development, Ok then a fiver.

Anyone who works in a place with the name "motorsport" in its title and thinks a mechanical distributor and single coil is better than a fully programmable mapped ignition system with a coilpack......

Are you sure he wasn't the cleaner or teaboy or something ???

(and I'm a lot older than him !!!)

whats hes done is rubbish anything he doesnt understand ,

that way he wont be faced with the situation of you turning up and asking him to tune it ,and therefore show him as a total imbecile without one of 2 brain cells to rub together ,

unfortunately for the retard ,

you have this resource to refer to ,,,,

a megajolt will create a hotter, longer duration spark ,far more accurately timed ..

an intercooler will cool the inlet air ,creating more power for the same boost , or the opportunity to raise the boost without detonating the contents of the cylinder .lag effect is neglegable unless you put it in the boot of the car behind .

Listen to these people, between them, they have built the fast A series mini in the world, done the cylinder head work on the championship leading Metro Turbo Challenge Car, written custom fully sequential ECU software, owned & operated rolling roads including tuning Cooper F1 cars. That's one hell of a CV, they know there shit and aren't just loud mouths.

Cheers Rob, I duely note what you say, that's the reason I joined the forum but you know what it's like when some so called expert plants a seed of doubt in your mind. It grows and then you start to question if you are doing the right thing.
Not worried now it seems that the general consensus is the chap's a bell end. I'll find someone who knows the mini and the mj.
Thanks
