Did about 200 miles today with the turbocharged A35, which has been behaving itself very well recently (got nearly 40 mpg on a trip to Sheffield, running in a new diff).

Any way, I was leaving some lights going on to an unrestricted dual carriageway and a bit of the old red mist came down. I floored it to about 6000 in first and had about 5000 on in second when it kicked hard, went into the red before I could change up and then did the same in third and fourth, By then all the rest of the traffic was about 200 yards back and there was a light blue cloud behind me.I couldnt believe that it could go so fast.(I had not looked at the boost guage) It continued to go very well and was building boost much quicker than ever before but I did not floor it again for about 50 miles. This time I did look at the boost guage - off the clock past 20lbs.Drove home more sedately and found that 1)vacuum pipe from manifold to distributor had fallen off and 2 )my boost valve solenoid had fallen off and there was unlimited boost available. It still goes OK and there are no nasty noises but I really miss that surge. Is it realistic to expect the pistons to survive occasional boost at this level?. (I have been using 15 lbs in this way since the beginning of this year)

What pistons are you running Dave ? Have you any way of monitoring fuelling & charge temps ?
I bet it's interesting at 20psi in the A 35. *surprised* *happy*

Still running standard Midget pistons and no attempt yet to monotor AFR or charge temps. All I know is that the pipes to and from the I/c are at vastly different temps and that it accelerates without hesitation so I dont think its too weak.I,m used to it going quite well but it shocked me when it took off this morning - bet it shocked the bloke in the BM who was outside me at the time a lot more !I changed up to 5th at about 85 and it just kept on pulling,so I chickened then before it got too obvious it wasnt standard.

Oh, and I am building the third replacement engine, with Metro turbo pistons and all the good bits so if I blow this one its not the end of the world

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Sorry Sam, they were not as good as some I acquired later and you may have read of my problems with rings.
I am such a dummy with computers that I cant seem to post pictures, despite help from other forum users. The car was featured in Retrocar magazine late last year, but please note the spec is now a bit different and changes regularly.
Rod, if I understood what a wideband AFR is I might be tempted to try,but this is a step too far for my simple mind.
Commander. you are welcome to quiz me anytime.

Hi Dave, sound like Fun, but yes as has been said before get a couple of bits of kit so you can keep any eye on the temps and fueling.

this is what a few poeple on here use, including myself for fueling, after a rolling road set up of course *wink*

The common ones are AEM (as per Miniwilliams above), Innovate (USA again), and Techedge (Australian).
There are agents/re-sellers in the UK for all of them (and there are other makes too) but it's often cheaper to import even with customs charges.

Personally I chose TechEdge but that was mainly because they do a good DIY kit (as well as fully assembled ones) at a significant discount and I needed two.

OK, will research a bit to see what may be involved though I doubt it is practical to use much more than about 10/12 psi for very long on a pretty low spec engine like mine.I tend to use very high boost for a few second just for the kick it gives me(and the car) as well as the expressions on the faces of the other drivers. It has made a few Nova/Golf/Corolla/ etc etc etc type cars with their BOOM BOOM boxes going look a bit inadequate.
I am going to try and upload some pics now, so lets see if I can do it.

Looks like I cocked it up again - can anyone access this album from the URL shown, please ?.

Tadge, go into your photobucket, below each image there should be some text, copy and paste all of this onto the forum.

The bit above is missing the end off which is why it doesn't work.

Wideband lambda is very simple with some of the kits, I also use the AEM kit which can be bought from the states from ebay for about £150 now. All that is required is a threaded boss (supplied) welding to the exhaust, the sensor is fitted here, and the only other connections required are a positive and negative electrical supply to the gauge unit.

The album that Rod has found is the old one - I have made a new one labelled "for turbominis" and must try harder to get it up (pardon ?)

OK found it......

EDIT - two things were wrong, you had lost the end bit of the URL (web address) and you had put the IMG (square brackets around) in front. You only use the IMG codes for single pictures, not when you want to take people straight to a website, ie. the whole album.
