Does anyone know what the function of the part is (circled in red)? Im not sure if it adds rigidity at all, but most other beams don't seem to have it. I was thinking of chopping it off to save more weight? *oh well*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Nic told me about the exhaust problems, and I thought that rather than modifying it, I may aswell chop it off! I got it cheap second hand too. Lol

Not on the car yet Colin, will be a few months yet.

i fitted one of these YEARS ago for some one,

we ended up cutting that bar in the middle then bending it up and welding it to the bar above so it formed 2 triangles.

Matty.

I think I've seen something about this before but I'd say the reason it's there is for triangulation to prevent fore/aft flexure of the beam at the unsupported mid point under cornering forces.

The original 1960's Speedex Beam Axle design, the drawings of which I managed to get hold of to make the beam for the van, were acquired from the original designer (courtesy of Steve at Merlin Motorsport).

His drawings show this triangulation and I can only assume the Huddersfield beam is a copy of the Speedex design.

It would be interesting to compare how much flexure actually occurs with it fitted and without it.

However, I too thought about the exhaust clearance issues when I made my beam and decided to leave this triangulation off. That said, I did try to reintroduce it as much as I could by fitting two drop down welded stiffeners, one just inboard of each of the inner radius arm brackets.

I've been under my car when it was being MOT'd and I've seen how much you can force the beam to bend when you pull the handbrake on and off so for this reason I'm going to make and fit an E shaped clamp in the centre of the beam above the central handbrake cable divider thingy. This will be bolted over the beam onto a resin block straight through the rear heel board. It only needs one bolt just to prevent flexure at the mid point.

I've attached a pic of my beam showing the drop down welded brackets - they make great pads to jack the back of the car up ! The other intention with these pads is that I had intended to fit an anti roll bar so needed somehere to locate it on the beam.

Haven't needed an ARB yet though !

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

Make your own - I had a speedex type beam on my old shell. Fortunately I bent it like a banana when I crashed at Goodwood as this was the best thing that could have happened to it as it flexed like a pole dancer!

as above on making room for a zorst pipe - thats not the worst part. The part you really need to tackle are the brackets which hold the trail arms on. As supplied they are simple "L" section brackets which offer as much support to cornering forces as a wet cornflakes box - they need bracing across the open ends of the "L"to rectify, from memory this is the top of the bracket as the trail arm is in the road of the other end.

If Carling made Mini engines

So I have a huddersfield beam which I purchased ages ago without looking at the other options out there and will soon be needing to fit it to the project.

Is the genral opinion that the huddersfield beam is no good or will i be ok just reinforcing the end plates that mount the radius arms and modifying the strengthening bar to clear the exhaust ?

I can weld so this wouldnt be a problem but dont want to comprimise if im just going to end up with an inferior/weak beam.

what do people think ?

Thanks

Will my project ever be finished !!? hopefully you guys can help !
Its only been like 10 years in the making and I'm only just assembling my engine!
