Engine anyone? What would you like?

I was in Manchester this morning and I passed this.

We really do live in a throw away society

This pile is nothing compared to the MOUNTAIN!! that is sat on the docks in Widnes!!

The cost of all that design and engineering has been thrown away, scrap metal costs no where near as much as a brand new, or even a decent used engine.

I was looking for a fiesta 1.25 engine a few weeks back. There are millions of them knocking about. people want around £250 - £300 for a good runner, but if you were to weigh that in, its £30 tops. new would cost, well I will hazard a guess at £3000 prehaps, yet it is still the same engine with the same engineering put into it.

The scrapage scheme in my eyes, is generating more Co2 emissions that it would if the old cars were maintained and kept on the road.

Its waste!!

Ok, right, here is Mount Ironback in Widnes.

what I want to know is how the fuck they managed to pile it so high, there is no machinery on the site that will reach that high!

I guess they built the pile by flinging stuff. When I take cars to the weigh bridge for recyling, I usualy ask them to lift it of the trailer for me. Most of the time a chap drives up in a big grabber, picks it up by it's roof and throws it across the yard.

Is that actual all old engines or just scrap metal?

I agree...its cheaper to maintain an old car than for manufacturers to build a new one...and more envoirmentally too

I fail to see what the problem is here

Who knows the stories behind where each block came from.

They may be write off's or cars that were so badly corroded that they were dangerous.

All someone is doing is stock piling them until the value goes up. Or may be saving them up until the value goes up.

Better then burying them in a big hole in the ground, or sending them away individually on many many trucks/boats, or being killed by a cat B write off that was badly repaired instead of being broken up and melted down

I can't understand how they got it so tall either and more importantly how they are allowed to pile it so high with a train line being so close, imagine if it slipped,

i think my old renualt will be ending up on one of those piles, 170k, to be replaced by a newer model, will be a sad day

Why have they let it build up so far. There must be 10's of thousands of pounds of scrap there...

if that was around the corner from me the pikies would have it gone in a day
