Seriously mate, if you think that is big, you should see the pile that is sat in Widnes. I'll see if I can get a pic today.

Yes, but probably not in this case (or the docks)....

When I was in my local scrappy about 6 months ago they also had a larger than normal pile. Chatting to the old boy (father of the owner) he said that a year previous they had nothing because China had taken it all at very high prices to recycle for their expanding economy but, with the recession, prices had dropped so better pile it up until prices are high again.

But it will be recycled, not thrown away I would hope :)

The cost of all that design and engineering has been thrown away, scrap metal costs no where near as much as a brand new, or even a decent used engine.

I was looking for a fiesta 1.25 engine a few weeks back. There are millions of them knocking about. people want around £250 - £300 for a good runner, but if you were to weigh that in, its £30 tops. new would cost, well I will hazard a guess at £3000 prehaps, yet it is still the same engine with the same engineering put into it.

The scrapage scheme in my eyes, is generating more Co2 emissions that it would if the old cars were maintained and kept on the road.

Its waste!!

I don't believe the scrapage scheme was put in place to get old cars off the road though - it was a ploy to get people buying new cars as the major manufacturers were in dire straits and its all the government could do to bail them out.

It's waste in one sense, I agree - the scrappage scheme especially.

But, apart from people like us, who is going to recycle a worn out £300 engine back into a running one ???

And by the time a modern engine is "scrap" (and £3k to replace with a new one) the body has dissappeared to rust around it.... so no-one will pay.

At least if it gets melted down it's back in "the system" and people are being employed to work with the "new" steel it provides rather than destroying the environment even more by mining for yet more iron ore....

Rant over.

Ok, right, here is Mount Ironback in Widnes.

what I want to know is how the fuck they managed to pile it so high, there is no machinery on the site that will reach that high!

I guess they built the pile by flinging stuff. When I take cars to the weigh bridge for recyling, I usualy ask them to lift it of the trailer for me. Most of the time a chap drives up in a big grabber, picks it up by it's roof and throws it across the yard.

I agree...its cheaper to maintain an old car than for manufacturers to build a new one...and more envoirmentally too

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

I fail to see what the problem is here

Who knows the stories behind where each block came from.

They may be write off's or cars that were so badly corroded that they were dangerous.

All someone is doing is stock piling them until the value goes up. Or may be saving them up until the value goes up.

Better then burying them in a big hole in the ground, or sending them away individually on many many trucks/boats, or being killed by a cat B write off that was badly repaired instead of being broken up and melted down

leeds/wakefield.

I can't understand how they got it so tall either and more importantly how they are allowed to pile it so high with a train line being so close, imagine if it slipped,

Why have they let it build up so far. There must be 10's of thousands of pounds of scrap there...

Its easy to pile it so high. You just keep putting more underneath. Is everybody stupid?

Price fluctuates all the time...I guess the price isnt as high as they want to sell it at.
