Most common metric 'small' sizes 8, 10, 13, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24.

Odd ball size is 21mm. Perhaps it will fit an imperial bolt?

Motor manufacturers like to fuck every one over by fitting the most odd size bolts in the most awkward places, a bit like those funny star head bolts either cap or standard head. What is that all about? The Trabant only had two sizes of nuts and bolts, so you only ever needed two spanners *hehe!*

I'm sorry Sprocket but I disagree. Yes those are the standard sizes you expect to find on industrial bolts, but when it comes to automotive applications it is common to find 11mm, 14mm, 16mm, 18mm and really anything in between depending on how they were feeling that day. I've more than one 21mm spanner and socket and have used them plenty of times.

11 & 16 are quite common too. I remember the old Fiesta has 7mm alen heads to holld the calipers on, bloody pain. In the end we just filed down an 8mm.

There is nothing I hate more than finding a 12 or 18mm bolt head. I always try the more common sizes either side of them first, them rummage around at the back of the draw to find the little used buggers.

the subframe/body bolts on volvos are 21mm

its the same with allen bolts, (like on vw/bmw brakes etc) they use the sizes not commonly found in sets like 7 and 9mm, probably to get you to get iut serviced at the dealership, more likely just to piss you off!

As a general rule of thumb, Japs use 12 and 14 where euro cars use 13 and 15. For the smaller stuff everyone uses 8 and 10. A lot of cars use 7mm allens to hold calipers on. VAGs, Range Rovers and Mercs are the first that spring to mind

what i do love about volvos is that the nut head will be a 13, and the bolt head a 14mm, so you dont need 2 spanner sets out like with alot of jap motors

christ, i wonder why i dont have a girlfriend lol

Dont be ashamed, I get excited over the fact that 1/2" and 13mm spanners are pretty much the same size, so when I start to round a 13mm, a 1/2" offers a more "snug" fit haha. Or when I have to undo a 13mm nut and bolt, I can just use the 1/2" to hold the bolthead!

Also, I like to call 10mm sockets and spanners "Glenn Miller". Hey i'm single too, whaddaya know :)
