I have worked on engines this big, just monitoring and control, not mechanical. The sequences for starting them is somewhat interesting. They are great to watch though, they have a real rhythm to them.

I did my apprenticeship on large diesel engines, amongst other things.

This is a 9 cylinder Allen S12:



We also made a V18, S37 at 7500hp. The '37' stands for 37cm stroke.

I spent the hot summer of 1976 in the test bay whilst they were test running a 2500hp 6 cylinder S37 on heavy fuel oil against a dyno. Not an experience you forget.

Years ago i went to chatham docks, whilst i was there i visited the maritime museum.

In there was a Crankshaft out of a submarine led on the floor, and i thought that was huge.... but nothing compared to the above!
