Just got back from the rolling road day, & what a top day it was. Congratulation to Matt & Jim who both made 250+hp and Mike who made 200+
Some excellent results from the other cars with some 170+ runs.
After running like crap on thursday nights rolling road session my car never missed a beat today, but still only managed a poor 142hp and was totally flat after 5,000 rpm. I've got some investigating to do.
Still a top day & was nice to meet everyone. I'll let the others fill you in on the results. :)

Yes it was a great day, a big thanks to Iain for organising it. The average bhp for the cars must be nearing 150.

Well, if my rough calcs are correct, the average was around 170 hp !!!

I had a mixed day.

Car was running fine on the way there, but a soon as we put it on the rollers, it decided it did not want to play. We ended up with a saw-tooth power curve that peaked at 103.7hp, well short of what it should do.

And then it messed about on the way home. Worst bit was that we a had a bonnet moment at 90mph. Luckily the hook held it.

We had a similar problem last week when I took a scribe out in to impress. I just turned the ignition on/off and it sorted itself out.

I think I know what the problem is :$

Big thanks to iain for getting this organised.

Can rough specs be included? So i dont have to trawl through threads to get an idea of what people have.
Just like turbo and cylinder head.
Interested to see results.

The full details will be in a magazine in the future so I doubt that you will see a full report here, sorry. You will just have to piece together what people post.

well that was a hoot ..

set off at 9 ish ,got to nm by 10 .

lots of people there and a car on the rollers ,mike and phil trolled up at about 10.30 i think it was ,and they'd driven 200 miles ..ulp! very early start.

each car got a good while on the rollers ,not just one run ,like some dyno days ,which was very nice to see ,and i think relaxed the victims fretting about ending up with a bag of pistons to take home.

nobody suffered from any wheelspin ,as far as i could see ,so that was a help towards steady reliable power readings .

i was very umming and ahingh about going on ,since im off away soon ,and definately didnt want to leave a dead mini behind me , also the fan was way too low for my intercooler ,but i was running well retarded timing at about 15 degrees ,so decided in the end to pop the spud on there , think i was 2nd from last ..

so in i get and we do the run down test for losses ,first run is low boost and i meant it to be 10 psi but in fact it was 12 ,running a fair bit lean 13.6 :1 , i was expecting around 155 for 10 psi , as i thought it was ,hoof my old boots if it didnt trump up with 167.8 bhp, blimey !

passing quickly through disbelief and joy , i supplanted these with greed ..

next run ,15 psi ,getting v lean i wizzed out the choke ,and it got a fair bit richer ,11.76:1 so a bit too much for max power ,but popped out 182.1 bhp ,hmm at 15.3 psi ,,so one more run at 16.2 psi , at that brought it up to 187.6bhp , at the same mixture .

so in conclusion ,with a rich safe mix ,and retarded timing i was v happy with it ,and i drove home thinking god i wish id wound it up a bit more ,, it gained 5.5 bhp with .9 psi more boost ,so thats promising .,

and in the end i had a warm ic and carb ,whereas when running at the track they are both cold to the touch ,i was also expecting clutch slip like i had at the drag racing this year , but in the end had no slip i could hear ,because the intake temps were up so torque was down on normal i think.

after the run i went and weighed the car ,came in at 715kg ,so i then took out the spare and detritus ,and it went down to 685kg ,thats with a half tank of fuel .

great to meet the crew ,and i think the general atmosphere was very freindly and enthusiastic .
roll on some higher boost runs with a better mixture ,more timing and a huge fan taped to the ic *evil*

well done to everyone for such a stonking high average ,and no blow ups .:)

Yes it was a good day, just what i needed to spur me on and get it finished.

Well done to everyone i think, i think everyones car did good power for there spec, apart from iain that is.lol

Robert, nice write up, its nice to hear what was going on when it was running up,and how and why.

Phil, keep us informed on your findings on the low power,i think it would benifit others with maybe simalar problems.

Sure will, I'm suspecting the cam timing's to advanced as the power curve is really steep and there's bags of torque low down, but it just hits a brick wall at 5,000rpm.

I was going to say cam timing, but surely it could only slip retarded?

It's possible I've made a fook up in my rush to get it ready for MITP ? All I've changed on this years build is to dry deck it & fit a new cam and it's 40hp down on what I've had before. Admittedly that was on Baldwins rollers, but I'd still expect 155-160hp on most others.

Ah, ok, looks like that could be the culprit then.

Thanks to Iain for organising, Matt for the pics, and Jim for bringing his scales.

Here are some of my pics for the day

I have loads of pic's on the camera and have films of quite a lot of the rolling road runs. Will get them uploaded asap...
