Ive decided that car dealers are pirates just like insurance companies

We went to see an altea yesterday at a volvo garage, up for 6k it being 5 years old ment that it was quite a high price for the year and model, quite a few things wrong with it that i was happy to fix, however i had pointed out that the rear tyres has been run while seriously under inflated lots of damage to the sidewalls, the sidewalls were smooth and had cracks going from the rim to the tread there was also cracks all around where the tread meets the sidewalls, the dealers response was that there fine and legal due to the tred depth being ok so he would not drop any money off the car

Obviously we walked

Finding a car in short notice is turning out to be more stressfull than selling my bloody house! ive got the added pressure of Lisa expecting me to find a decent car like i have in the past.

Anyone know about volvo v50 diesels? any week points or things to look for other than the usual? i am looking at a 55plate with 77k on thursday

no its for a girl 2.0 diesel

I test drove a 2.0 D S40 sport Manual and a D5 S40 auto side by side.. There wasn't much in it, I would have chosen the 2.0... bt the wife found me a 330D touring.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I never have and never will buy a car from a dealer. As you are finding out they are just not interested in making a car right before they sell it, as the things you spot Joe Average will not notice, and they know that.
I would stick out for a nice original and genuine car from a private sale, its easy enough to find a good one, plenty of service history, 4 matching tyres, old MOT's etc etc.

I agree with Tom mate, you know enough about cars to make a good enough judgement to buy one privately.

Cars are just numbers to the dealers, and you pay way over the odds. As long as you've got all the service history you'd be better off buying private.

thing is i have looked for private sellers

For example
Volvo v50 2.0d s 2004 black with cloth 105k fsh private sale £7200 2 miles away

Volvo v50 2.0d se 2004 black with black leather 88k fsh dealer sale £5990 38 miles away

The dealers on the face of it seem cheaper with cars that have less miles and i really have been looking

mate of mine has an 04 diesel c class merc , spotless, low to average miles, auto,full leather, merc service up to last year, and defo not abused,recons its worth 10k.

I have to say that the dealers I am looking at at the moment are giving good prices. The thing is I am looking for an ex company car with maybe 100k on the clock, but only 4 years old. They are only about £3k to buy. If you go private for the same price you are looking at a much older model and hence more owners and missing history. Also company cars seem to load up the spec for some reason whereas private buyers skimp on the spec. Yes dealing with dealers is a pain, but you have to go where the cars are.

From the hand me downs ive had at work, they all generally all get abused. Saying that they are regularly serviced etc..

I got my L200 from a main dealer, it was a better price than private/independents, i got a full tank of diesel, towbar fitted for 200 (couldnt buy a decent one for that never mind fit) number plate for the trailer, full years warranty/aa cover, full checked over (had just been serviced).

Dealers get them cheap and if they have to sell them on quick, often sell them cheap.

This was on a 2 1/2 year old car at less the half the new cost with loads of extras, low mileage, FMSH etc.

Ps, sorry to here about the accident mate, glad she's ok. to be honest i would persuede her to keep a hire car, if she's going to get stung for a claim, may as well make it worth your while. (which is doubtful though!) why make it difficult for yourself and rush round to find a car when there is a hire car waiting for you.

I bought my car at 3 years old from an independant dealer. He bought it on the thursday from the auctions, fresh from lease (1 owner full audi history etc etc), I put a deposit on the saturday and got it a week later. Paid £1500 less than the an equivlant car at a main dealer.

That said, this was pretty much 3 years ago to the day and the world is a different place now...

the 2 litre is the oldest engine among them.

The 1.6 is really not that much down on power, and its a more modern engine according to the volvo dealers themselves.

well after near on 450 miles 11.5 hrs and loking at three cars i can home with a nice v50

we really really needed to stop around that area as well as we were both knackered and lisa needed her jab as it had gone 830pm, we ended up stopping at a McDonalds nr oxford at around 11pm

only time will tell if its a bargain or a goodun, i did get the feeling i was not well liked by the time we left, that said i did not force them to sell it to me.
