hey guys, i know there is a few of you on here who are really into photography (great pics matt, love your work), so i need some advice. im after an SLR camera and ive narrowed it down to the Canon EOS450D and the Nikon D5000. i cant make up my mind, they both have very similar specs. has anyone got either of these and can recommend one.
Cheers

Is the D5000 the one with the snazzy tarty flip screen fingy? thats the technical name btw.

i think you'll do good with either but i'd personally go for nikon, ive had 2 and never had a problem with them, feel good to, as in well made.

There is no way I would be able to operate one of those things. My camera ability would be stretched operating this!

cheers guys i had a look at the both at lunch, totally had my mind set on the canon until i held and played with the Nikon, think its going to be Nikon.
It does have the snazzy flip down screan, it also feels a lot better quality than the Canon.

i can recommend the canon G10 for you cossierick, ive used it a few times and the quality matches that of an SLR, but it all depends on what your going to be using it for really.

Chris, get yourself along to a camera store and have a play with them both. Make sure you try out the menus as well as the feel of the camera, as you are going to spend a lot of time getting lost in them.

Then just decide upon the one that you like most.

It also might be worth waiting until after christmas, unless its a present, as prices will probably drop or a sale bargain may be had afterwards

chris get to a camera shop the nikon has a smaller body than the 450, the lumix is tiny and the lieca lenses and system are expensive compared to the big two, i would go handle them and see whats comfertable to use, i have a 450d and love it its more camera than i will ever use

Cheers Wolfie, i had a play with them both yesterday, the Nikon felt really nice, but all the reviews do say the 450D is the better one. i think its going to be the case that ill go to the shop have another play and make my mine up there and then.
Cheers guys

Sorry Ant, but thats the exact reason I bought a Nikon! The Canon felt cheap and plasticy to me compared to the Nik.

I guess it is down to personal choice, I bought a Nikon D60 and cannot fault it in any way at all.

I also thought the Canon felt cheap and plasticy.

See... even here personal preferance is apparent... the nikon vs canon debate has been discussed and argued for many years before digital in fact... weigh up the feel, ease of use, price of future lens and accessories etc and take your choice. It will be a decision that will effect your future camera decisions for the rest of your life.

see i dont agree on the feel of the two, i felt the canon was bigger and better built with a better menu it felt better to handle

clearly if you bat for the other side the nikon is the way forward *wink*

on a serious note look at the sony 350 and the pentax 20 both very very good cameras, all the sub £500 cameras will give good results, i would ignore the bigger is better in sensor size and ignore the fine detal stuff thats in the mags as the camera is only as good as the person behind it.

It's much of a muchness, I went for Nikon on the simple ground that I think white lenses are pretentious.

i bought a sony a200 a while back for 2 reasons:
1, it was only 200 quid new after sony cashback
2, the old manolta lenses fit and ebay is full of them

Should look at Pentax. Very good, its all I've ever used and you can use lenses from 20 years ago on them so there is a lot to chose from.
