I am progressing, snail like,to install basic ignition with the Megajolt V3 supplied by a forum member.

I have all the hardware and have sorted out the physical installation of components but now have to look at the wiring at which I am a dummy.

First question: the VR sensor is apparently polarity sensitive, but mine has no markings so how do I decide which is +ve or -ve ?.

Second question : I want to re-solder all the connections to the Edis plug, but I cant get the pins out of the plug. I have a little red plate thingy which looks as if it sould be the release tool but it doesn,t seem to work - any ideas ?
Or does anyone have a spare Edis plug to sell to me ?.

I do hope its all going to be worth it !

For the VR, look at the junior timer connector (plug) that goes onto the VR sensor. If it is new it will have "1" and "2" moulded into the plastic part of the pin sleeves. "1" is positive.

If secondhand or unmarked, hold it with the wires towards you, the plug part away from you and the metal release clip on top, "1" is the righthand side.

Can't answer definitively about the EDIS plug (I don't use one) but often with the larger plugs, as well as the locking plate (the red bit) the pins themselves will often have a one way tang that needs to be depressed with a very small flat bladed screwdriver.

I just knew you would be first to respond, Rod !.Many thanks for the usual sound advice re the VR sensor.

As far as the EDIS plug is concerned I can see how the pins are locked in, and have already tried the jewellers screwdriver trick, without success.
It looks as if its not the first time someone has tried the same thing as the plug is a bit "used",which probably is not helping.
Any offers on a replacement, anyone ?

TM forum is great - but then so is our youngest son, who spotted how to get the pins out (better eyesight, more nimble fingers) and showed me how they all lock back in again.

I had puzzled a little over your comment Rod, re locking plate as I thought it was a tool for releasing the pins, not locking them.

Full steam ahead (?) now to get it wired up ready for RR session, where I have been promised they will load a map they did for a 1380 turbo and then adjust it to suit my engine, as well as sorting out the needle for me.

Getting the right sort of vibe from the operator when he tells me that I am unlikely to achieve 140bhp, realistically, as ,in his opinion, many figures are inflated. In any case I am taking the view, expressed on here before, that the figures are irrelevant except in the bar, all that matters is that it is driveable and fun.

Can you share the 'secret' Tadge? I'd quite like to do a 'tidy' install in my car.

Well it's normally for locking them, I've not seen one yet designed for releasing them, but I'm still young (4th oldest on the forum:))

I don't want to be seen as a cheeky young wipper snapper, but Polevolt sell terminal removers. I only have their catalogue in PDF format. Item TT99

No secret to tidy installations Andy - just plan it before you start drilling holes and cutting wires.

I have found that grouping components on an alloy plate, with the wiring taken out the back, out of sight, usually makes for a neat appearance. Do you remember seeing my relay and fuse board on the OS inner wing ?.

I had actually meant getting the wires out of the connector, but no I didn't see anything out of place under your bonnet all looked very tidy.

I plan to do a pre build once the shell is finished, make the loom etc before it goes for paint then I won't have to make holes in my freshly painted shell.

If Rod is 4th, then I must be 3rd *frown*

I guess, Tadge, you have the honour of being 1st, so who is second?

I reckon Rod has missed of few.

Dont really want to stsrt a war on this, but I know very little of how HP figures are calculated, other than from the torque detected at the wheels.I have always been amazed at the differences quoted between the HP at the wheels and the flywheel. The lost HP has to re- appear somewhere as energy cannot be destroyed, so it is probably as heat. The differences I have seen quoted impute enough heat to melt alloy !

I am going to Lynx AE, recently mentioned on here. The man in charge learned at the feet of Peter Baldwin but has, unlike Peter, the facility to deal with FI and Megajolt, when required. In my conversations with him I thought he seemed very grounded.

The proof, if that is what it is, will be seen when he has tuned my car, probably very early next year, when I have run it in.

I seem to be living up to my perceived status as the oldest old fart on here !!

most of it goes to heat the tyres and so on tadge , if looking for an accurate figure ,just ask to see the calibration certificate for the rr .

You can buy a proper terminal removal kit, I've got the same one as this, very handy it has been too.

Really looks the biz Tom, but a bit pricey to have for the one occasion only.
Robert, if its not scary, why would Nic have nightmares about it ?

I dont scare too easily anyway and my 16stone+ will knock the edge off the performance of any mini - it certainly handicaps me on the bike.

We have something else in common then, except I weigh myself in kilogrammes.

That tool of Tom's is nice but, as you say, for a one-off it's pricey compared to grinding down a screwdriver blade.
