Thats cool. However I agree mute it.

I did have someone ask about a billet block yesterday - go nicely with the billet 7 port head!

JK

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

It would go even more nicely machined to match up to a k1100 head. *happy*

I was part of a similar conversation/thread on another (non-mini) forum.

We were waxing lyrical about costs/designs and then some bloke from one of the scandanavian countries posted up a load of pics of one that had been done ..

Apparently billet ally blocks are pretty common in the drag racing scene over there. With a lot of one off builds, that you'd never think would be worth it...
Perhaps there's an Aseries one of them somewhere....

I wouldn't be surprised if there was...

Too many projects!

I'm sure I have seen pics of an aluminium a-series block before. BL prototype I think

You would have thought that someone with the equipment would start producing them. Or even start casting them out of ally! 1275 blocks are getting few and far between, probably becuase vegard has them all in poland or where ever it is he lives *hehe!*

its about time the mini got either 998 or 1275 alloy blocks, the ford chaps have had alloy blocks ages, i cant remeber if its the the old cross flow or kent engine block but i'm sure there would be plenty of demand if the price was right, £999 & thye'd sell i reckon

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!

I have a ally Kent motor at my feet now Robert - with the iron head (built) on it, it weighs much less than a bare A series iron block- lol!

KAD made a cast block and showed it at the Silverstone show in 95? fell off the map for some reason - If I did a billet one it would be substantially braced around the mains caps and top of the block

-aye obviously an option to take a K straight off as well!!!

- if someone has the drawings for a block to save weeks of measuring........

Add a couple of mains and a new crank and off you go!

Im sure i heard that BL or Bimmer destroyed plans/drawing for the Blocks. I could be wrong though

i'm thinking the same as mikerace

you know the prototype alloy overhead cam head BL did? i'm sure i read they developed that with an alloy block in mind to eventually to go in the metro but due to the unique way our car industry funded things it was shelved!

i'm sure there was something at gaydon!!! i may be wrong but i'm sure there was blocks made & there probobly still at longbridge underground!!!!

1st to provide proof of a running Bimmy Conversion!

Brisbane ,Australia

my thoughts are that at least 3 different alloy blocks should be made

one for std 1275cc + 5-port , 3-main (replacement type for std-ish minis to keep them going for years to come)

another in the same vein with 3-main but for Bimmer head

& one with 5-main , make crank & rods to suit Bimmer head

just my 2 cents worth tho

I dont see the point in the 5 beirings, its not like the A dosent stand up to revs as it is, IMO all your doing is creating a packaging issue.

far better IMO (and easier) to provide exra meat in the block so you can go for oversize mains to get the crank pin overlap up.
