Does anybody have any experience of these? In particular one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Sealey-TC960-Man...=item5632bdcd1a

I can see it saving me a bit of cash over the years if they work ok.

Looks simple enough to use on the instructions:

I have a smaller bead breaker without the stand. It's bloody hard work and usually results in damaged rims. I only ever use it on scrap tyres/wheels.

I used to work round the corner from a place with something similar, in the end they would let me use it myself for a few packs of biscuits for the tea club etc.
They work OK, but you need quite a lot of space around them to be able to use them with a decent length bar. I've considered a tyre machine a few times, but for the space they take up, I think I'd opt for a powered one, e.g. that spins the tabel for you, as they take up much less room than a manual one.

I've looked at these before and if the description and technical info is correct they won't do 10" or 12" wheels, just 13" upwards.

It seems it will do 13" to 18". All my cars (including minis are on 13+) I think I have the space to use one and I can make a bolting down point that I can bolt it to when necessary so it won't be in the way. Perhaps I can find a cheap second hand one and give it a go?

I've got one of these and a couple of tyre leavers

I didn't pay anything like that much for it though

I've been having similar thoughts recently but was looking at this one:

That one is rated to do 3" wheels up to 12". Looks a bit small to me.

What has prompted this for me is that I need some new tyres for my road mini. It has 13" wheels and I can get yoko A539s for £50 a corner. But add fitting to that and it is nearer £60, if I can get someone to fit them. All the local places round here that list them want £75 a corner. Anyone got any better ideas?

what about balancing though ben?

I have access to an old bad boy similar to the clarke one you posted

After you have done a few sets, you will think the £10 a corner is cheap, bear in mind they remove and replace the tyre, the risk of damaging the tyre or rim is on their head, and they will usually throw in balancing too

I get wheels balanced if they need it not as a matter of course.

I do agree though £10 a corner is not bad, but most places won't touch tyres they haven't supplied. So all told it could cost me £100 more. I think I will have to shop around a little more.

See what about something like this?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TYRE-CHANGING-MACHIN...=item4ced3d990a

Plenty of them on ebay, I'm sure like me you have layed out £300 odd for other trinkets for the garage, OK you won't make your dosh back straight away on this, but over a few years I reckon its a handy thing to have, esp if you can do a few tyres swaps for people you know at a tenner a time etc.

I have to say fitting slicks would pay for that, between me Wil and another racing pal it could workout.

I've been keeping half an eye out for one for a while, but have never got round to it.

This has reignited my interest, and seeing as I bought a van the other day I may well actually get around to buying one.

I used to fit my own tyres using nothing more than two tyre levers. To break the bead I bolted an old rim to the car and used it to press down on the tyre.

Bloody hard work, but when you're a student and work at McDonalds every penny counts.

i know its differnt but i fit tyres on scooters etc with tyre levers and without some form of rim protector u tend to damage the rim easily as they are alloy and the levers are steel... i also have fitted car and bike tyres on a machine its a shit load quicker with alot less chance of damaging the rim as you lever against the foot on the machine not the rim itself...

like tom i've been looking for a tyre changing machine but the space it takes up has put me off recently, however i will get one at some point as they are so much better than fitting them manually.
most tyre places will balance your wheels for a few quid if they need doing

Peugeot Expert, it was cheap and needed a gearbox repair, which was handy seeing as its the same basic box as the 205 GTI, which I happen to know inside and out fairly well.

Its now repaired, probably will do a couple of jobs I have in mind for it, then punt it on.

I brought a manual tyre remover from ebay a couple of years ago, it has a compressed air cylinder to break the bead, the wheel and tyre is then mounted on the upper platform and removed using a tyre bar.
Theres a guy on ebay now selling the same tyre bar with nylon ferules which stop the alloy wheel being damaged.
I've found it to be absolutly brilliant with the race Mini tyres and has saved a fortune. It easily does 10 inch rims.
I've also found that by fitting tyres by hand as opposed to a tyre machine which can stretch and distort tyres there is often no need to balance the wheels at all. Fitting by hand with loads of lubricant with good technique is a gentle process.

Ben,

If the links work this is identical to the one I've got, I think I paid around £60 for it a couple of years ago off ebay. The tyre bar for alloys is still available on ebay for £55 see link.
I don't know if you are local to me ( Burntwood, Staffs ) but if ever you need tyres changing before you find a suitable machine I can easily fit them for you.

well, ive inherited it:

this week ill buy some rim soap (and probably a new tyre spoon), and next weekend ill be taking the tyres off the british open classic's rims to give them a blasting and lick of paint getting it ready to sell

Ill report back, and if it does the job well enough, might even give it a lick of paint, lol

Well, had a go at taking a tyre off the spare today

to minimise risk to the outside rim, i gave it a go levering the bead over the inside, but with the heavy duty steel tyre lever i got with the machine there was little chance of getting it over without seriously grazing the rim at some point, even using rim protectors, so just ordered one of these

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT

should make it a more stress free operation, will leave the rest till this arrives
