My computer went blue screen when I was streaming some music online yesterday.

I found an online guide to help repair my install of XP SP3 from my CD.

However, I'm not getting this prompt found on page 6 of the guide
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsys...xprepair1_6.htm

Instead I am getting this

Hopefully you can see that repairing isn't an option. I'm afraid to go any further as I might (more than likely will) irreparably damage something.

Where do I go from here?

I'm guessing Partition 2 is your boot volume and as setup can't work out what it is it can't repair it.

If it where me I'd put the hard disk in something else and back it up, then reinstall windows from scratch.

Thanks Andy. I don't like the sound of a fresh install though. I might just put windows 7 on if that's the case. I did back everything up on an external drive about a month ago

I might do that so. Will all the programmes I have installed come with the backup or will I have to get them again?

The old boot sector might of thrown a wobbler. Save what you can as above. Pull hard drive and connect it to another machine. Setup the partitions again to be safe...format...and have hours of fun sticking everything back on. :)

Yup, looks like it can't see where Windows resides as AP says and hence can't repair it.
I would do a full backup, format then a clean install.
Also, read something today re: bsod...
Microsoft's latest patch to stop some malware working may actually be causing the computer to BSOD...
Can't remeber the exact details, but some programs code may be similar to this and everytime you run these programs you may BSOD. They haven't sorted it yet but are working on it...

Thanks everyone.

BadgerBaiter, the BSOD was from the KP977165 update on the 10th of Feb. I did install it. Apparently, it allows Trojans to elevate their priority or something. I did actually have a Trojan this week but it seemed that I resolved it. This BSOD has a different code and happened after the Trojan was cleared

EDIT: Here's a link to the update related BSOD

FIXBOOT and FIXMBR will probably sort you out Gary.

Just load up the XP pro disc and open the recovery console.

That BSOD is purely disk partitions having a shit fit, unless a virus/trojan/donkey porn messed with your partitions...

Thanks Carl, I'll read up on those commands.

Andy, I didn't have my drive partitioned so should there be any partitions at all? Or are the ones above different to partitioning the hard drive so it looks like several smaller drives?

Stupid donkey porn :(

Mike I don't have Hirens. I've never heard of it :$

I have made some progress though. I now have it booting, thanks to Carl recommending FIXBOOT.

Now all files are present but there are still a few abnormalities. The windows and buttons have reverted to "Classic" style and "XP" isn't selectable as an option.

Also, I am getting a "No supported wireless adapters available in the system" so I cannot get online. Is this a driver problem?

Thanks to everyone for getting me this far

Personally I would just back it up and reinstall. windows has had a shit fit and you'll never get it quite right again.

Yeah I also reccomend what Andy said, I told you about those commands to make it easier for you to make retrieving anything you need from your hard disks a bit easier before you wipe it.

Fair enough, I'll dust off the external hard drive

OK, I have the external hard drive here. It came with Nero BackItUp software which I have used before but never restored.

If I use this software and then restore it, will it contain all the software and drivers that I have installed? Or does it only contain the files saved on the computer?

Does anyone recommend any other methods of backing up? Can I simply copy the C:/ drive to the external drive or something?

Please bear with me as I'm a bit of a computer spaz

Whenever I have installed a new OS, I always just copy the entire C: drive to my external drive and then I can drag stuff back to the new OS.
Probably not the best way of doing things, but it gets me by.
I do, however, do fresh installs of all of my software. It is tedious, but it makes sure that they all work correctly.

That's what I was hoping not to hear haha. I've had the computer for about 4 years so it has an absolute crapload of software installed

Hm, well it is possible to run software from another drive. I have run software from my back up drive before.
I just prefer to reinstall the software so that all of the registry keys are properly done. Unfortunately, this aspect of computers is slightly blurred to me so maybe one of the other lads will be able to better advise you.
Will you be reinstalling XP or getting on the Win7 bandwagon?

I'll probably reinstall XP as the versions of all the software I need for college is for XP. I couldn't afford to try and get it all for Windows 7
