Fastcarl i have a steel exhaust stud stuck in a alloy head with no access for a socket type stud extractor, i have'nt the room to do the double nut & ring spanner method either

can i heat one metal or the other to try to help matters

i'm in dire straits & not the band /

its a snapped stud but have at least an 1" & a half to grip the stud but it cant get a socket type extractor on it as its not got the clearance /

if i can get srip of the stud & used a blow torch to carfully heat the head & see if they move

Weld a nut on to the stud and the heat may help to free it when you put a spanner on the nut, otherwise heat the head up locally, carefully,and try a bit more force.Releasing fluid may help (Plus Gas or similar) but the corrosion between steel and alloy is difficult to penetrate.

for this kind of situation - very good for removing nuts with chewed up heads. the smaller ones should work OK on a stud

Mole grips might also be an option?

But welding a nut is my favoured option by far. always works for me.

Although last week spend a whole day drilling out hi temp studs from a gas turbine combustor casing in situ royal pain in the ass but being M8, i wasnt risking snapping an extractor off in them!

Welding on a nut is my favorite too.

As said, the heat from the welding is usually enough to free the broken bit anyway and the welded-on nut just makes it easy to unscrew the broken bit out.

its on my fckin vw camper cylinder head & you cant take the head off in situ, its looking to be an engine out job arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh i'm absolutley reeeeeeling!

can you slide a larger nut over then give it a good hard squirt of mig.

yes i'm thinking of welding a nut on! mini13

should i heat the ally or steel as they expand differantly or shal i weld the nut on & wack a socket on & use a long bar & increase the load slowly & progressivly & hope the fecker does'nt snap

If its alrerady snapped, ask your self, why, either the stud has seized in the alloy,if so your more than likely gonig to struggle whatever yuo do,if it snapped because it has seized in the portion where it pased threough the manifold then it may not be seized in the head,

as has been mentioned . if posible try the welded nut and firstly try wind it in a little, if it moves plenty lube and try work it back and forth,
these fooking situations are usually resolved with experience, and unfortunatly its the kind of experience that cannot be directly passed down the phone line.

oh any advice on what metal studs to replace the knackered ones, i have the choice of stainless studs but stainlesss can be brittle & i dont know if its good for exhaust studs

the nuts are torqued to 50Nm

can those brass or coppe manilfold nuts be torued to 50Nm

You've probably done it by now, but if you haven't I'll say don't worry about the co-efficient expansion of the ally & the steel, just try to get a load of heat into the stud so it releases the corrosion/thread-lock on the threads.

(There is a chance that the threads were crossed when the person fitted the stud, or the stud was too long so it 'bottomed' in the hole, but fingers crossed eh?)

Wipe away any penetrating oil etc so the thing doesn't catch fire or create choking smoke, then if you use a MIG welder, weld a socket to the stud so you can use a ratchet etc to undo the stud with the socket when the heat has done its work.

If it still won't undo & you have enough stud showing, run some weld along the stud & socket to get more heat into the stud.

Don't quench the stud because it may become too brittle & snap. When it cools, spray some WD40 on to see if it will undo then.

i've tried to weld a nut on today & just cant get the penetration into the stud, i ground it flat so the metal was clean, tried my best to weld the stud to the nut & it just kept breaking off!

3 times i tried

then i tried to weld the nut & stud together by going around the inner perimeter of the nut with weld & building it untill i got to the centre & the same happened it just breaks off!

am i up shit street & havin to pull the motor ya reckon?

nightmare!

if i could get one i'd need a 7mm socket style stud extracter but the ones in the packs you get are 6,8,10,12mm

Does your weld break, or is the stud getting shorter each time ?

If the weld is shearing then you are not giving it enough welly to get it hot enough to weld properly.

If the stud is breaking you are getting embrittlement, possibly because the weld is cooling too quickly.

BTW if you cant get a stud extractor in there, I dont fancy your chances of getting a spark erosion machine in either !!

because of the postion of the stud i cant tell if its redusing in size but i have my little 135 welder on full wallop!

if anyone in or near cov with a stronger welder has part of there evening free i can make you tea & biscuits to weld to nuts on, a long shot i know
