Fastcarl i have a steel exhaust stud stuck in a alloy head with no access for a socket type stud extractor, i have'nt the room to do the double nut & ring spanner method either

its a snapped stud but have at least an 1" & a half to grip the stud but it cant get a socket type extractor on it as its not got the clearance SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

Weld a nut on to the stud and the heat may help to free it when you put a spanner on the nut, otherwise heat the head up locally, carefully,and try a bit more force.Releasing fluid may help (Plus Gas or similar) but the corrosion between steel and alloy is difficult to penetrate. |

can you slide a larger nut over then give it a good hard squirt of mig.

If its alrerady snapped, ask your self, why, either the stud has seized in the alloy,if so your more than likely gonig to struggle whatever yuo do,if it snapped because it has seized in the portion where it pased threough the manifold then it may not be seized in the head,

oh any advice on what metal studs to replace the knackered ones, i have the choice of stainless studs but stainlesss can be brittle & i dont know if its good for exhaust studs

You've probably done it by now, but if you haven't I'll say don't worry about the co-efficient expansion of the ally & the steel, just try to get a load of heat into the stud so it releases the corrosion/thread-lock on the threads.

because of the postion of the stud i cant tell if its redusing in size but i have my little 135 welder on full wallop!

royal pain in the ass but being M8, i wasnt risking snapping an extractor off in them!
