ok, i live in sydney australia and i just found out there is goin to be a law braught in by June to stop people under the age of roughly 18 driving tubro'd cars where as you used to be able to drive a turbo car when you are 16, i'v spent the last 6 months rebuilding my mini clubman which i am also half way through turboing so it will hopefully be finished by my 16th birthday in May..........so now what do i do with the car, i havnt got the room to just store it for 2 years, its not finished so i cant sell it for anything, every one else in my family who can drive has a car, im truely f*uking piss'd off! this law is supposed to stop young people getting kill'd on the roads but its just as easy to kill yourself in a pulsar as it is in a high power sports car if you dont have the experience, they should make it compulsery to do a few extra driver learnering corse's after you get your licence, i think that would make more of a difference.

Wot does every one else think? what are the law's like every where else?

Why dont you drive it with no turbo for two years or lie like most people.
Ps years under your belt are the most likly way to stop crashing I know very well

yea but if i get caught it's loss of licence, also it kinda defeats the purpose of turboing my car, i wont'd the fact that it was turbo to stand out, i guess i kinda wont'd to show it off, my dad recons i should put it together as a N/A engine and just ceep all the bits for a conversion but that means i'v got to pull the car back down and rebuild it again when im 18. I dont realy know what to do

Good plan that...

I'd run it nat-asp and get all the other bugs like handling, looks, interior ironed out first, and spend the next two years saving up, and building a MONSTER hp engine!!!

It sucks, I know...
In the UK, you can't drive till you're seventeen.

I had tons of fun in my first mini - all we used to do was buy stock (good) 1275 metro motors from the scrappy, push them onto the side and swap the cams for a 286, swap the head for a stg3 unit, and trash them till they broke! Then we'd get another engine and repeat it all...
happy days, and that was plenty of power for me at 19 (didn't get a mini for two years - first car was a RangeRover!).

Another thought - is it JUST turbochargers, or superchargers aswell???

put a stealth valve on which you turn on top to make noise quiet or load as fcuk! then make a nice fancy cover to hide turbo under!(weld the bonnet down!lol)
dont forget to hide gauges(psi) and intercooler etc... anything they would look for!

hope it goes well!

i dont know about the average copper over there but here they wouldnt know a turbo from a wiper motor, just dont put a dumper on it as that will obviously give you away

*happy* i like the idea of a 1380 turbo engine, i'll just have to do my best at hiding it all then.....i think the pipes going all over the engine bay might give it away though

Dont then, the only thing giving it away on mine would be the dump valve and plenum chamber, just get a big weather shield over it all!

when your a p plater.....yep, pritty much, d cops hear will pull you over for anything, the problem is that i realy wont'd to show off the fact i'v put in all the effort to turbo the car, buga it, i'll just make a cover for just about the intire engine bay and say its to stop the electricals getting wet or some bullshit excuse

i know it sucks but why not just wait?
here in the uk we could jump in to any car we want as soon as we can drive, the only problem is that insurance companies dont like it and either wont cover you or charge you ridiculous rates to get cover, hence most young drivers have to put up with pretty standard stuff for at least a year to get some no claims.
it does suck but hey thats life and i dont know the laws where you are, but if you did get caught you may not be driving any car at all for a while or you may be very skint from paying fines

yea, either way im screw'd..........i think i'd prefer to get caught driving it opposed to not drive it for 2 years, the law isnt in yet so im wating to see what the igzac penalties are, and the insurance here is as bad, im not insuring my car anyway, i think im payin $12000 for the car start to finish and it would cost me roughly $8000 a year in insurance.......thats more than i earn in 2 years.
What i realy want to know is does every one realy think limiting the power of cars for young drivers will lessen the amount of young people getting kill'd? I stick to what i said before, if you arnt a good driver than it's as easy to cash doing 130km/h on the highway in a skyline r33 as it is in a nissan pulsar, we should have to go through more driver learning couses before we are allowed our licence, but then again im only 15 and have never "legally"*wink* driven so i dont realy have the rite to say*frown*

i'de think long and hard before driving without insurance, dunno about in oz, but over here uninsured drivers are considered complete arseholes, mainly because it pushes everyone elses insurance premiums up and if they have an accident the othere person would have to either find the money themselves or try and get the money from their own even if the accident is not their fault.

hmm, not sure on that, i think over here if you crash in2 sum 1 else's car and you arnt insured you still have to find the money to pay for the other person's car but its just that you dont get any moeny from the insurance agentsy to help with the damage to your car, if you cause an accadent then you pay for all the damage with or without insurance, plus i wont be driving the car every day, probably once a week at the most, i'v spent to much on it to risk crashing it on the way to school

i just had a chat to my old's about it and they said they were going to get 3rd party insurance wich means if i crash my car into you the insurance company pays for your car but not mine, and what i said in the last post is pritty much true, if i crash into someone else without any insurance, than the other persons insurance company comes after me for the repair money

Of course more power equals more accidents. Maybe I'm getting old, but I sure am a much better driver now then when I was 18 (which is the limit in Norway) The fact that kids may drive cars legally when 16 kinda scares me.
Blimey, you've got to be 18 to buy sigarettes, but 16 to drive.. Silly!

cant believe ur thinkign of hiding the turbo. i meen really!?

over here insurance costs are such that i couldnt even afford to drive a "fast" 1.4 litre volvo 440. i stul around my 1st year in a fiat panda, 1nd year a std 998 mini, 3rd year a tuned 998 mini and only after geting some years under my belt could i afford fasdter. quit moaning and be happy you can even have a 1.3 litre mini.

p.s. i started driving at 18. couldnt afford to do it erlyr. and even then i was a childish stupid prat on the roads!

My opinion on the matter- I personally believe that it in principle is a good idea.

My first car was a Mini Clubman Estate 1098cc, more than fast enough really for a 17yr old. I modified it to have better suspension and steering and I think that it taught me how to drive smoothly, as it didn't have all that much power but was more about momentum.
I now have a Xsara VTS with 170bhp as an everyday car, but I have now grown up to the extent that I don't feel the need to drive it as fast as possible at all times. I am fairly sure that if I had a car as quick at 17 I would have had a fairly big accident or worse.

So my view? Stick with a low powered car for a bit, but learn to drive it quickly. That will stand you in good stead when you can have a faster car.
