Do you have any of the classic symptoms of the DMF failing, ie, rattle at idle and starter motor not always engaging ???

It may be something completely different but if you have either of the above, it is the DMF falling apart and the crankshaft sensor looses a stable signal - the "glowplug light" isn't just for the glowplugs but is the EMS fault warning light.

Turning on/off will clear the fault code but if the DMF is on its way out, it will just keep coming back.

I have one sitting round the back of my garage waiting for me to change the DMF (and a failed turbo)....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Both what you and Rod says sounds typical of the one mondeo tdci that John's dad ran as a taxi. Get your flywheel done asap if it's at fault, they have a bad habbit of ejecting themselves through the gear box casing.

another issue i have had on these is the injectors loose there coding in the ecu, god knows why, but simply re-coding all 4 injectors always cures it!
obviously you need ££££ of kit to do the coding though :( tehres 2 cars we get in every few months need this done, the ecu is on its way out.

Done some Googling and apparently its the cam position sensor.
Got one on order.
The DMF is fine.

Try plugging it in/having it plugged in, it should be able to tell you why it has put the light on.

Got VAG Com which has an OBD2 reader which should theoretically work on other cars?

Vag com only reads codes on VAG stuff Audi VW, Seat and Skoda. You do get some good code readers/ clearers out there now that you can plug into any OBD2 car and read clear (only clears soft faults or cured ones) faults. They read the fault in the form of an number that you either look up a book of codes to get a description or in some cases fire the code into a website for a description.

I've got a fault code reader that does most cars. You're welcome to borrow it. It should certainly read a car of that sort of age.

But the fault code and associated part isn't necesarily the cause of the problem. We plugged in Mike Race's Toyota. This showed a problem with the knock sensor. In the end the problem was with the head/head gasket and the engine over heating was causing the knock sensor to over/under read and the ecu to go into an error state

tbh it probably had melted the knock sensor, seen this a few times on toyotas lol

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

The VagCOM (VCDS) bit yes what about the separate OBD2 bit?

Right, had it on diagnosis kit and the map sensor wasnt working. Spent a fortune on one today and that aint fookin fixed it either.
Its driving OK but theres no boost so I thought the map sensor would sort that.

Any ideas? How do I know Im actually producing boost?

Paul

EDIT The light is still flashing, could it be that now I need to get the fault code removed?

HA Ha , classic non turbo diriver, the usual clues to boost being produced is a fooking marked increase in acceleration, lol

Yes Carl. lol The map sensor controls the wastegate, so I could be dumping the boost still, or the turbo isnt spinning

I seriously doubt it!

I'd say have a look at the mechanicals first, as at least you can see if these have failed,

if you stick air into the waste gate does it move?

If it's the same age as mine (or newer) it doesn't have a wastegate, its a VNT.

The first VNTs were operated by an air cylinder (just like a wastegate actuator) and the later ones by a stepper motor.

A stepper motor problem (later ones) will bring up the fault light but a failed turbo won't, just plenty of blue smoke.

My money is still on the crank sensor brought about by the DMF being on the way out.

I dont think theres anything up with the DMF, it starts great everytime, theres no noises of any kind, also would that stop it producing boost? ooh and its an 03 reg
