Whilst the engine is running if you remove the oil filler cap and the revs drop and it starts running like a bag of balls thats a head off jobbie isn't it? |

did you do a compression or leakdown before taking the head off? "Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun"

The filler cap removal issue and that light valve suggest intake leak to me, is that right? Whatever it is its running very lean on 3. Personally I would say No 2 (second from thermostat) is the only good one. I would expect all my exhaust valves to be that colour, not covered in carbon or oil..... I thought light coloured exhaust valves meant it was running lean? In my experience, not unless they are really white.... Here's the one I took off my MegaSquirt test engine
Only a few hours running (at next to no load) but AFRs right. Standard head but skimmmed a lot to compensate for the dished pistons (no turbo for initial tests). Valves were cleaned of carbon and re-lapped before the testing and the little bit of excess oil around the inlets and chambers is because the piston rings haven't bedded in yet..... EDIT - and because the engine has not yet seen any significant load.... Edited by Rod S on 14th Apr, 2010. Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |

We have losened them all off but it is still slightly visable, just completely caked in carbon.

Well, you've already got it off, but I would have said not necessarily. The revs should rise when the Oil Filler Cap is removed (with the PCV System) due to the extra air being drawn in through the crankcase and eventually being fed in to the induction. By the looks of things it could have been something as simple as a blocked air filter......It is running rich. |

There is definately something wrong with the exhaust seat and valve on No. 2.

That could explain why No 2 is different to the others if a leak has been "overheating" it, but the other three are all far too cool (or too rich) IMHO.

I think that it looks all black because they did some simple diagnostics with it on choke.
