Thinking of purchasing one as a daily driver to replace my BM, anyone have any experience or thoughts with these?

Nice car, will be thirsty though. Check it carefully, as they get older they will start to need a few things, my old one was a 2.5 TDI Quattro, I put a radiator, pair of cv joints, alternator, pair of rear springs and dampers on it while I had it.

Stay well away from the 2.5TDI ones. If buying an Audi, buy a petrol one. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

What's the age and mileage? My 53 plate a4 with 125k on the clock is still going strong. It's never had much more than oil changes, brake pads and tyres. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

I know its an old unit not but i'm now on 153k and still going fine, albeit i've replaced an injector recently. everything else i've done on the car has been service items The biggest problems with the 2.5 unit is the cams which are made from cheese, and the rockers which are made from pudding. You need to change the oil VERY frequently on these if you want a good life from them. Also, the fuel pumps at £2000, although they are made by Bosch, the quality is very inferior to the BMW and Mercedes units. Cam belt change? Takes a day, as the entire front of the engine has to be removed. (This I've not encountered myself, but I've been told) If a diesel is needed, buy a E39 530. If buying a petrol car....Buy a BMW then as well I'm not a big BMW fan, but they did manufacture infinitely better cars than Audi in the late 90ies early 00s.

Same old argument. You will always have some people in the BMW camp and others in the VAG camp adamant about which is best.
If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

Its a '98 r plate with 150k thiming gear done @ 130K, I appreciate its a high milage and older car but its a sensible price and its fully speced. Just looking for a replacement for my E30 touring Bm. Would concider most of the BMW or VAG camp, would rather it be RWD tho,

If it is not a diesel needs to be a 5 cyl so it has that nice roar and you can utter the legend 'fire up the quattro' (ala Gene Hunt) On 5th Sep, 2011 Vegard said:

the front end off thing for a timing belt is actually a bit of a blessing, takes less time to swing the bumper/rad/aircon out the way on an a4 than it does to get all the timign covers off, say, a mitsubishi MIVEC fto. once the front end is off access is fantastic.

Well the car has sold, so on the hunt again, been looking at vws, audis and bms, for all the cars around the same price and milage you seem to get a bit more for you money with the bm's

If buying an old E46 check the rear suspension points VERY thoroughly. These have a tendancy to crack and is not at all easy to repair. E46 is a fun car, E39 is a bloody vessel. I've got one myself, nice tourer, with no particular faults except some electronic gremlins. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

IMO the e 39 is one of the best cars ever built. They just don't engineer the same quality these days I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.
