Strange, his "Member #" is 8,915 but we have 7,500 users. Does this mean that 1,415 users were banned? If so, that is impressive

What I want to know is why we have member number 8915, yet the list of members shows less than half of that???

I never noticed that before but yes, there's only 2,822 members on the list (assuming I can count)

A little house keeping perhaps. I would expect Alex deletes unused accounts from time to time.

I think that you will find that member numbers are not incremental when issued.

Saul Bellow - "A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep."
Stephen Hawking - "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."

I disagree Paul.

When a user is created it gets assigned a number, 4940 in my case, and a firendly name, apbellamy in my case. This allows the firendly name to be changed.

The member number acts as the primary key for the 'users' table and so is unique and is incremented every time somebody registers. If a user is deleted, it's likely that the table isn't back filled.

The figure at the top is just a count of the number of registered users. I noticed earlier this year/late last year that the count had gone down to around 7k, but the user numbers where still starting 8...

The forum engine is built around a relational database. It's all fairly straight forward when you break out the different componants.

I understand what you are saying.

But, just see what happens with the next new user.

Ben+boost=smile is 8916.

Let's see if 8917 is issued.

You didn't leave enough time since B+B=S registered :)

I reckon it increments the number every time a new IP address comes on, ie a new user. It then gives the latest number when the user registers.

Wait and see.

So what happens when two people sharing an IP address register? For example, two people using the same proxy server in an internet cafe etc.

In this instance Paul, I'm going to stick my neck on the line and say you are wrong. I don't question your posts on engineering and ellectrical matters, as I know your responces are bassed on your many years of experience and qualification. My answer is based on similar pretences *wink*

I may well be wrong. Just throwing up theories for discussion.

However, a simple discussion seems to have ruffled feathers. Apologies if my tone appeared confrontational, it was not intended.

I used to write bespoke relational database applications in 'C' in the late 80s, so I do have some idea of how they work.

There are definate gaps in the numbering and it is likley that some are automatically deleted and not back filled. It does not mean that there is not another explanation.

Ooo Ecky Thump! *Jester* I didn't take it as confrontational at all, I just thought you where over complicating it a little.

Re IP address, I think IP's are recorded when posts are made etc, purely for tracing purposes though. They change so frequently, I can't see much benefit it associating them with a user ID.

OK, here's another one for you IT boffins.

How come that when sturgeo and I both log on at home, same IP address, I do not see his name in the list at the bottom of the home page and he does not see mine?
