It's best to work out a) what sort of power you want and then b) what you are going to use it for.

Then you can look at the various project threads on here and work out how best to achieve it. Once you know what you want we can give you more specific answers.

well im goin from a 998 stage 1 anyway so its going to be a bigg difference enyway but not realy sure what sort of power atm .. i was going to build it as standard then change it but i thort it would be easier just to make it more powerfull straight away?? or not..:/? and il be using it for road use .. looking at a 12g940 head atm with ported polished ect. £100 i can get it for but would it be worth just putting a head on it?
thanks 4 all the info

In my case, I'm spending the money to build a bullet proof bottem end, with a descent gear box. I'm then bolting a 'descent' 5 port head to it and initially running a suck through super charger. It's not the ideal sollution and won't make the most power, but I've bought all the bits now. The idea behind this is that I can then bolt pretty much anything within reason to the short engine and make more power when I have the time/budget/inclination to do so.

At the minimum, I would rebuild what you have with new bearings etc.

how much is a bit?..

what is a pretty good engine?

either your budget will dictate your build or you need to set a power figure then have the cash to achieve it.

Andy's spot on, I'd build a solid bottom end, make sure the box and drops are in good condition. You could have a reliable 120-130bhp engine using stock parts that could easily be upgraded in the future by just bolting new bits on.

yes my dads checked it all and said that its fine .. have been told they are about 97bhp as standard so i was just going to put a better cam in than standard a ported head and maybe rockers..???? jus for now .. then in future maybe put other bits n pieces on?
could i just put a head cam and 1.5 rockers ? or if i start changing some things will i have to upgrade different parst aswell?
thanks

depends what you're after really. We've put a n/a MG metro cam in our turboed metro van, a well ported head and about 14psi of boost should give us around 140BHP. Bear in mind we have a very low compression ratio

How many cc's do the chambers have on this head that you are thinking of buying?

If it's designed for n/a it won't really be suitable, as you cr will be increased.

im not sure about the head all i knw its a 12g940 head.. the 1 that came off the turbo is a 12g940
but the one im looking at has had the work done to the head ... also i got told a n/a metro cam and i want to run mine at about 8-9 psi for now ..
but would i need to change pistons or enything like that?
or will standard ones be ok?
thankks

12g940 means nothing. All 1275 heads have this casting number.

Youll need to find the volume of the chambers. And the volume of the pistons.

Then you can find the compression ratio.
