Possibly. But to reduce fuel useage by 50% and retain the same performance, is impossible. In my eyes that would suggest that f1 engines are horribly inefficient, which they are not. If an F1 team could have an engine that used 1/2 the fuel with the same performance it would already.

A turbo will make fook all differance to economy if you are flat out all the time. Turbo engine fuel efficiency is through efficient crusing.

Even if you introduce alternative power (KERS etc) the carbon useage is just the same to produce the power.

Still I'm all for forcing F1 teams to develop fuel efficient engines/technology, I just think a 50% saving is impossibe.

as the article suggested F1 is uses far more power as a whole than fuel in cars.

Yes pretty sure it will happen. Straight 4 most likely i would have thought. I wonder if they will bring in a production block rule???

I know they are looking at Kers again. The plan is to raise the power level of this over time. so that it can absorb more energy (less brakes needed) and deliver it back quicker. I think it was introduced at around 30-40bhp. It was due to ramp up big style with the front wheels also allowed to charge the system. (thats why they had brake problems, the bias was all over the show with kers on rear wheels only and no automatic compensation allowed). In theory they could get rid of the brakes all together.

Mix in less weight, better aero, better engine effic, then i'd think 50% fuel reduction would be extreme end of what they could achieve in theory. I'd bet 30-40% was more likely doable.

Hmm, i dont see how they can be fair. I think all the power should come from the engine only. I also think they should strip all driver aids away too. Thatll sort the men from the monkeys.

If turbos do come back i wonder if we will see a new breed of turbos.??

Even if turbo's do make a comeback I doubt they will see anything like the 60psi boost pressures they were running back in the mid 80's.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

60psi is about 4bar, to quote mike, benetton ran 5.5 bar qualifying in '86 season

It;s all explained nicely on the Garrett website, I just stuck it in a spreadshet

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarre...bo_tech101.html

Starts off basic, but get to tech103 and it's all maths. If I just gave you my spreadsheet you wouldn'y learn anything, also I didn't make it user friendly.

Im guessing thats a fully fledged race engine, how reliable are these engines? Im guess theyre high strung and need a rebuild after 200 miles?
