Hi All,

My boss has given me the opportunity to make a part worth 500quid from titanium using ALM (Additive Layer Manufacturing), most of the cost will be the material as the machine and operator time will be negligible as its my new company doing the work.

This is for a one off only so we can use it on our company website as Im not competing with any of the guys such as Carl and John on here, this is purely for myself!

Ive got a few ideas what to make for the mini like a rear disc brake hub and caliper mount bracket or maybe even a titanium valve cover for my K head incorporating the breather / oil filler, or maybe even a series of smaller parts.

Has anyone got any suggestions as Im trying to think of something novel using topology design we can make it extremely lightweight and the more interesting the better!

Gaz

Sounds interesting Gaz, just wondering how the mechanical properties of the finished product compares to machining/casting more traditional methods?

yep it is laser sintering, you can make fully functional mechanical parts even a gear set! The surface finish can be a bit like cast parts and they do need additional secondary machining depending on the requirements, ideally i would like to make a functional component rather than a shiny ornament bolted on.

i would look at the heavy parts, radius arms, gearscase posss a subframe?

dont see the point in shaving a few grams off on a rocker cover when you can get rid of lb's

whats a john holmes gear knob??

wolfie if i could make a subframe that would be great but i can possibly only go up to the size of radius arms, that might be an option as i could integrate the rear disc hub/carrier into it??

i work for a research company in the Aersopace / Defence market but ideally i would be in motorsport but we are hoping to branch out to that.

most of the above is obvious stuff like con rods.

Making something that would be very useful, as well as cool would make more sense.

Gearcase would be a good one for sure. Or perhaps could you design a part to strengthen the existing gearcase ?

Then the design might also have some commercial value too.

Rocker pillars, 3rd motion bearing retainers, 4 bolt centre main, the rod change bit that sticks out the box (and the bit round it),
