as the car is slowly coming together for the second time, i thought it was time for the car to go in one direction instead of the whole mix mach variety style

so as i want to go the trackday car route there is one big floor stopping me .... i have a glass sun roof!

i have today been thinking about removing it and fitting a fibreglass jobbie but would love some reviews from people that have fitted them please

as it is coming up to christmas, might as well treat the mini to either a new roof or a internal linkage and i just cant make my mind up.

This should answer a lot and contains a similarly long thread about roofs.

I phoned Dave at tdk racing on monday, and after a long discussion decided to go for a carbon fibre roof.

see i agree with paul but i have only seen carbon ones!

and i was thinking because you never see any plasstics roofs that look nice could this possibly be because there not blended in well and the ones that are blended in well are unoticable and look just like metal?

fibreglass is lighter then metal on some occasions it is also less work to fit a fibreglass roof then a metal one i am told but yes it is still gay!

My carbon one looks good - replaced the roof for the same reason, to get rid of the sunroof.

I must admit i don't, but i can tell you that it was a pain. to get it sitting low enough i had to move the edge of the roof in on the car about a cm all the way around and then re weld the roof edges back on. This was needed to bond the roof to. We then used a flexible filler at the bottom of the roof in the gutter. then painted the roof section. I guess i probably spent a good day getting the roof right, its all in the prep....

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

a none metal roof is no good in a track car .....if you have a bad accident your in the deep stuff!. *frown*

i would remove the old one with the sun roof in and replace it with a metal one *wink*

this helps massivley to the strength of the mini as well.... think about it ? *Yes*

only my opinion *oh well*

I don't agree with benross.. Loosing weight up high is a good move in a track car, however a cage is essential.

I know we all talk about the possibility of rolling and getting impaled on a fence post or something but considering the window area of a mini there is surely the potential to get impaled through that too. Didn't the original TT have a fence post come through the door or something? So I'd say its mainly down to luck as to whether you walk out of an accident.

Why is that ?

Strenght ?

Laziness ?

So that one roof skin is not subjected to rain so won't rot ?

Rusty by nature
