I want a new v4 Megajolt from AutoSport Labs to replace my v2 but I'm trying to work out what the import tax will be on it.

When I got mine there wasn't any tax, I think it was sent as a gift and the value was less than $50 (or whatever the cut off point is!)

I had some electronic bits from Australia earlier this month and they sent it as a gift without asking. So I dodged the tax! |

I also bought the hard cut rev limiter from them (about 6 months ago), same case, no tax, I imagine with Autosport they just say gift and send it out without asking :) |

As above, but, please do bear in mind that if they do send it as a gift, and it goes missing, there is no insurance and you have no come back. On 15th Jul, 2009 fastcarl said:

The piss take is that they apply duty on items £100 and above and the Megajolt comes to £101 approx after converting :(

Certain states in America charge tax don't they? I think one is California. I've bought from overseas before without an issue but I don't want to get stung for an extra third of what I've already paid.

declaring something as a gift doesn't necessarily mean that you won't get charged import tax.

There are essentially two taxes, import duty (a small percentage based on the description of the item) and VAT (17.5%, soon to be 20%). However there are lower limits for these depending on whether the items are "gifts" or commercial goods. The limits for both are clearly stated on HMRC's website.

Incidentally, there is a 'safe' limit that is supposedly exempt - it is 18UKP. This is the point that the value is determined to not be worth pursuing import duty. However - it seems JPboost's experience shows that there are days when they don't have enough work to do so pull any random package.

Tax and duty are paid on the total cost of the goods, which includes the postage!!!! That really does take the piss!! That £18 soon turns into the postage alone!!

As Dave said, if its expidited with UPS or Fedex, you will pay the tax, duty and a handling charge. Its a bit hit and miss with Royal mail and Parcel Force. Other way around in my part of the UK.... As I said earlier, handling charge plus tax by RoyalMail/ParcelForce (they are the same company) and just the tax by UPS (can't comment on Fedex, never used them). RoyalMail/ParcelForce send me a letter asking for the tax (duty + VAT) and their "handling fee" before they will deliver, UPS just turn up and ask for the VAT (by cheque or cash) with no additional charge. Seems strange it should be different in different parts of the UK. Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |

I told parcel farce that their handling fee amounted to extortion. They were holding goods I owned until I paid a fee to them which I couldn't question, and I couldn't take my business elsewhere. Tossers. |

I told parcel farce that their handling fee amounted to extortion. It most certainly is in my opinion. RoyalMail (of which ParcelForce is wholly owned subsiduary) has a reciprocal agreement with most countries in the world not to add charges (in either direction) for delivery. They extort the fee by calling it a processing cost for the duty/VAT. BUT, if you ever had more than a couple of items processed by them you would have seen that the "handling charge" varies in direct proportion to the duty/VAT payable. So why does it cost more to process a £100 payment than a £10 payment ????? My credit card works exactly the same for either amount. Ripoff Britain. The sooner RoyalMail/ParcelForce is privatised, the better IMO. Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |
