Just take your time. Prep is everything, but if you don't lay it down right, you'll be sanding and repainting from now until your first borns wedding, lol.

I painted my mini myself and it came out perfect, I practiced on a punto first and painting little bits like my fuel tank. ive since painted my bmw and a nova i restored, its very easy if you get the best equipment you can afford. I bought a devilbiss GTI spray gun, and the biggest compressor i could get, and like miniswordsman says take your time.

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder. On 15th Aug, 2011 robert said:

I just gave it ago too, I saved up to pay someone to do it and bought the paint but then ended up out of work so had loads of time and no money. I am glad I had a go but you can tell it's not right but next time it will be better. I did really enjoy it though.

I think I will have a go at painting my cars myself too. How do you go about choosing the compressor, gun etc? Must be loads to choose from |

I think I will have a go at painting my cars myself too. How do you go about choosing the compressor, gun etc? Must be loads to choose from You'll need at least a 50lt compressor, the higher the cfm the better. Anything smaller just won't flow the volume of air required. As for the gun, the best you can afford, really. I prefer a gravity setup, however others are avaliable. It's best to get a couple of different sized cups/needles also, a 1.2mm - 1.4mm is best for most modern paints. Don't forget a moisture trap for the airline too. Cellulose is best to start with, as you'll find it easier to work with and spray - modern micas and pearls are much more expensive, and more work to get right/blend should things go wrong. Of course be aware that all metallic 2k paints need lacquer; as such air-fed respirators are highly recommended, in fact isocyanate lacquer isn't nice stuff and the vapours produced when drying are nasty - in a confined space this is very bad for your health! The down side is that you need a bigger compressor to feed both the gun and the mask. As others have said, the process of spraying the paint is 5% of the work - preparation is everything!! (hours and hours of it!) Good results are obtainable at home though - the more time spent preparing before, the better the finish will be!! This weather isn't the most condusive to painting or refinishing, mind...! Edited by Fortecphil on 18th Dec, 2010. |
