Ive been searching and searching but had no definitive answer. What I am trying to find out is what the difference is between trailer tyres and car tyres.

The only real difference I understand is that the side walls on a trailer tyre are more rigid to cope with heavier loads, and this can cause a slightly harder ride and less conrnering performance.

The reason I ask is because trying to find some period looking crossplys is VERY difficult, and I have found a set that will look right but they are trailer tyres. These are going on my 850 mk1 driven at a snails pace (with my pipe in hand) so by all means it is no weekend warrior and I am not looking for performance and handling.

Cheers
Matt

Warwick.

i would imagin the speed rating isnt very much, afterall the towing speed isnt very high either...but as you said you dont plan on using it as a performace car.
not sure if there will be a speed rating stamp on the side seeing their trailer tyres but worth a look :)

David.

It says the max speed rating is 62mph. I'll probably need a tail wind to reach that kind of speed! lol

I think you need to be sure that your insurance company is happy with trailer tyres. An 850 could easily exceed 62 mph and the insurers will look for an "out" whenever they can.

I bought "normal" 5.20x10 cross plies frm Adams and Page in High Wycombe for the mini wheels on my trailer - speed rated tp 93mph.

Ah ive just realised the ones I was looking at are too narrow! These look ok though, not sure on the speed rating yet!

Andy - I do really like them tyres, but they look like more of a race tyre than a period look, and they are a bit wide. Im after a 145 or 5.20 width.

Dave - Do you know what make they are?

But something like this...

or this...

Now they would look out of place! lol

So is everyone on the same lines of thinking as me. As long as the speed rating is more than the vehicle is capable of, there shouldn't be a problem?

You can only legally do 70 no matter what the vehicles natural limits are. What speed rating did the original tyres have?

Myself and carl discussed this a while back. What happens when you actually reach 62? Do they just explode or what?

They get hot and over time would fail.

Ah thats a very good point! *Idea*

That last set are cheap as chips too. I'd much prefer to pay £25 quid a corner than £80.

Not very sunny swanage

trailer tyres are usually much heavier ply, im pretty sure the ones on our car trailer are something like 7 or 8 ply..... versus 4 or 5 for car tyres

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

Well if the tyres are not of the same or greater spoeed rating than specified then it will fail an MOT.

Stick tyres on off of twin-k for mot time.

You cannot use a tyre with a speed rating lower than the maximum speed of the car.

I am pretty sure there are classic cross ply tyres still manufactured, and perhaps a call to the likes of Somerford Minis might yeild some results?
