Just wondering if anyone on here has ever run an old diesel on Vegatable oil? As diesel prices are ever increasing i am trying to find ways of saving money on the everyday car. Its only an old citroen xsara, so pretty basic set-up.

personally considering the cost and hastle of fitting an injection pump (even an old mechanical pump) i'd rather just pay the extra few pence/litre, plenty of success stories out there, but when i put pen to paper and worked out the coses it dodnt seem justifyable to me, have an old rover 220SDi as a daily kickabout. turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

A friend of mine used to use it. Like Brett said he started it on diesel then switch to the veg all once it was warm.

There are various websites on it. Some pumps will survive better than others. Some people buy changeover kits and heating kits for the veg oil.

fifth gear chucked veg oil straight into the tank of an old merc, might have been a c class, cant remember. It ran straight off the key, might have just been tv trickery, but looked good enough. Turbo parts collector at the moment, almost ready. |

The only viable way is, as stated, if you can get a regular supply of free used oil.

Ive been told to run it 70/30 split in winter and 80/20 in summer. I suppose if you dont mind using used oil and straining it then go for it. 1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

I had a friend who did this for a couple of years with his 306 XTDT. I think he used upto 90% but tried to keep it lower most of the time as it could take a little while to start on it. It ran fine without being heated at all. The downsides are that it smells like a chip shop, It takes forever to fill the tank with a funnel and I felt incredibly shifty buying Somerfield's entire stock of veg oil.

There is a web site that sells kits vegoil.co.uk or something like that. It gets very detailed about the fuel pumps and their durability to veg oil. I think modern common rails don't like it, but older td's are generally fine. I had a mk2 golf gtd that ran for two years on nothing but chip fat! Just recycled through a coffee filter and chucked it in! On 7th Nov, 2011 apbellamy said:

Apparently you can filter out the dye by putting it through bread, wouldnt know if it works but could be worth a try. Certain brands of cat litter will filter out the dye. Know of a few people who used to do it all the time. Not sure which brand though, or maybe most types work. On 18th Jan, 2011 philc said:

Red diesel is a far better quality fuel than anything you'll find at a normal pump. And you can nearly be 100% certain it is what it is, and hasnt been tampered with. If diesel plant and engines with hundreds of thousands of ££££ runs happily on it. You can be sure it is top quality fuel But from what I understand, even if the colour dye is removed, there are still chemical traces that identify it as marked diesel. The colour is just a preliminary visual warning. Even red is dear now. I can recall buying it for 13p/l !!!! for...er a generator 9.85 @ 145mph
